The Department of Medical Sciences is a large clinical department with a staff of approximately 250 and over 300 associates working at Uppsala University Hospital. The department has a broad research profile with strong research groups working in various fields. Research at the department, which is conducted in close collaboration with the clinical organisation at Uppsala University Hospital, covers both basic studies of the causes of disease and the development and evaluation of improved diagnostics and new therapies. Description of subject area: The academic subject includes pathophysiological, clinical and epidemiological studies of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, bile ducts and pancreas.

Responsibilities: Research, teaching, healthcare and administration. Teaching duties include course coordination and administration and supervision of doctoral students. You will also be expected to keep abreast of developments in your own scientific area and societal development in general. One third of the position consists of clinical duties as a specialist physician at Uppsala University Hospital.

Qualifications: A person who has demonstrated both research and teaching expertise shall be qualified for employment as a professor (Swedish Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 3). According to Section 5 of Uppsala University’s Appointment Regulations, a general qualification for academic appointments is the possession of the personal attributes required to perform well in the position.

Research expertise should be demonstrated through autonomous research and through the applicant’s work maintaining national and international standards of excellence. The applicant shall have demonstrated skill in the planning, initiation, leadership and development of research and the ability to obtain research grants in competition, as well as well-documented skills in supervising third-cycle studies. The applicant’s contribution to the international and national scientific community will be assessed based on criteria such as the quality and scope of scientific publications in the channels most relevant to the subject. The requirement for the acquisition of international qualifications shall be assessed with due consideration for the nature and specific conditions of the subject area. Cf. Teaching expertise shall have been demonstrated through qualifications in education and teaching (cf. Section 23 of Uppsala University’s Appointment Regulations). Furthermore, the applicant shall demonstrate well-documented skills in supervision at first, second and third cycle levels. One prerequisite for the requirement for teaching expertise to be met is that the applicant has undergone relevant academic teacher training of at least 10 weeks, or has obtained equivalent knowledge in some other way. Should special reasons exist, academic teacher training may be conducted during the first two years of employment. Academic teacher training shall include third-cycle level supervisor training. Cf. The applicant shall have a documented ability to teach in Swedish and English. If exceptional reasons exist, an applicant who currently lacks the ability to teach in Swedish may be assumed to be able to acquire that ability within two years.

Qualification for this position requires a Swedish license to practice as a doctor of medicine and specialist competence in gastroenterology and hepatology. The applicant must be able to present proof that they hold a Swedish license to practice as a doctor of medicine and of specialist competence in gastroenterology and hepatology, or have applied to the National Board of Health and Welfare for such proof no later than the deadline for applications. The applicant shall however be in possession of proof that they hold a Swedish license to practice and of specialist competence in gastroenterology and hepatology no later than the date on which an appointment decision is made. If the person offered the position also meets Uppsala University Hospital’s requirements for employment as a consultant physician, the applicant will be offered employment associated with the post of consultant physician (överläkare).

Assessment criteria: In selecting qualified applicants, research expertise is assigned the greatest importance followed by teaching expertise.

Research expertise refers to qualifications as a researcher. In the assessment of research expertise, research quality shall be the primary consideration. The research’s scope, mainly with regard to depth and breadth, shall also be assigned significance. Furthermore, consideration shall be given to the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and third-cycle studies and to obtain research funding in competition, as well as to the ability to interact with others both within academia (nationally and internationally) and in the wider community. Teaching expertise refers to qualifications in education and teaching. In the assessment of teaching expertise, quality shall be the primary consideration. The scope of teaching, in both depth and breadth, shall also be assigned significance. Furthermore, consideration shall be given to the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop education and teaching, as well as the ability to base teaching on research in the subject in question, while subject didactics and academic teacher training shall also be assigned significance. Teaching expertise includes the ability to interact with stakeholders within and outside the University on issues related to learning and teaching in higher education. Cf. Clinical expertise is also important to the position and will be assigned significance. Clinical expertise is demonstrated through clinical practice and clinical training, as well as participation in clinical development work. Clinical development work refers to initiatives such as improving or streamlining healthcare operations. Cf. Section 25 of Uppsala University’s Appointment Regulations. In selecting from among the qualified applicants, emphasis will be placed on experience of leading roles withing clinical gastroenterology. Experience of interdisciplinary research is also considered to be valuable.

Assessment criteria, other skills: Leadership ability and administrative skills are important to the position and will be assigned significance. The ability to interact with the community and share information about research and development will also be considered.

Management expertise is demonstrated through the ability to lead operations and staff, make decisions, take responsibility and motivate others and provide them with the prerequisites for effectively achieving common goals. Further examples of demonstrated expertise include the ability to coordinate the group, foster commitment, encourage participation and create job satisfaction, as well as the ability to manage conflicts. Administrative expertise is demonstrated by, for example, the ability to plan, organise and prioritise work in an effective manner adapted to the task at hand, as well as the ability to allot and maintain time frames. Administrative expertise includes overall operational planning and the capacity to manage resources in a manner that reflects operational priorities, as well as the ability to work in a structured fashion based on set goals and levels of quality. In assessing cooperation abilities, significance will be assigned to experience of and skill in popular science, editorship and other activities related to the exchange of knowledge between the University and the world around us, as well as experience of innovation and entrepreneurship.
