Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences of Uppsala University is one of the most complete of such academic departments in Europe, with about 250 employees. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans, from the formation of the Earth until today. We investigate the development of life and the Earth over billions of years, and study the connections between the atmosphere and oceans with regards to climate change and sustainable development.

Natural resources, particularly metal resources, are critical for modern industry and green technologies and society is facing a dramatic increase in demand for REE, Co and Mn at present. At the Natural Resources and Sustainable Development program of the Department of Earth Sciences https://www.geo.uu.se/forskning/nrhu/ we are investigating rocks and minerals from the deep oceans, the High Arctic, and even from the Moon for their resource potential in order to explore future sources for critical elements and metals for societal development and climate-transition technologies.
