Uppsala University, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology

The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM) at Uppsala University provides a broad international environment for research and teaching. The Department's research covers Three collaborative and partially integrated sections: Cancer, infections and immunity as well as genetics and genomics. More info: http://www.imbim.uu.se/research-areas/.

The Pivarcsi research group at IMBIM now seeks a motivated researcher interested in working with RNA research and cancer: https://www.imbim.uu.se/research-groups/cancer/pivarcsi-andor/

Project description: Our research group studies non-coding RNAs such as long-non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs) in tissue homeostasis and carcinogenesis. The group takes advantage of using a translational approach with analysing transcriptomic alterations in patient material and performing functional experiments using state-of the-art in vitro and in vivo disease models. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to be part of a team with an enthusiasm for science and a longstanding interest in non-coding RNA biology and in the skin.

Duties: The successful candidate will be responsible to design and perform in vitro and in vivo mechanistic experiments in a study that aims to characterize the role of non-coding RNAs in skin cancer and their mode of action. The successful candidate will perform studies on primary cell cultures, patient samples and mouse models of skin cancer, such as tumor xenograft models. The candidate is anticipated to perform experiments using RNA interference and CRISPR-based gene activation/inactivation to modulate non-coding RNA-activity, in cell culture and 3D skin models, and to an increasing extent, data analysis with bioinformatics methods. The successful candidate will be anticipated to take responsibility for the research project, including following relevant literature and identifying and communicating need for further development. Within the duties of the position is the supervision of project students as well as aiding in lab management. Some teaching may be included.

Qualifications: The candidate should possess a PhD degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g. biomedicine, molecular biology, pharmacy, medicine). Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. The successful candidate has a genuine interest in in medical research, molecular biology and problem solving. Experience with and a deep understanding of molecular biology techniques, cell culture work, transfections is a requirement. The applicant must be able to work both independently as well as a part of a team. The applicant is expected to have an ability to solve problems and openness to learn new methods. An excellent knowledge of English language, both oral and written, is required. Emphasis is placed on personal suitability.

Additional qualifications: Experience with animal models related to cancer is not a requirement but meritorious. Experience in non-coding RNA research is not a requirement but meritorious. Experience in RNA interference and CRISPR/Cas9-based gene editing is not a requirement but meritorious.

Salary: Individual.

Starting date: As soon as possible or by arrangement.
