The Department of Game Design’s activities are all located at Campus Gotland in Visby. The Department offers international and national study programmes in game design at Bachelor and Master degree level (first and second cycles respectively) and freestanding courses in game design, expression and game programming. The hub for research in game design as well as related areas is our Games & Society lab.
Duties
The position involves teaching, including course coordination, development and administrative work. The teaching is carried out within the study programmes in game design and freestanding courses, on the campus and at a distance. The development work relates primarily to joining in efforts to develop the Bachelor programmes in game design further as well as to contribute to courses in the master program, including degree project supervision. The appointee must be prepared to take part in the Department’s internal work and to undertake assignments as programme coordinator, director of studies or equivalent. Duties also include staying abreast of the field the appointee is hired into (i.e. game design) and to become an active part of the development of the department in particular and the University as a whole.
Active participation in the Department’s work requires regular, physical presence at the workplace.
Eligibility requirements
The minimum requirements for the appointment are a Master degree and subject specialisation in game design that includes solid knowledge of the process of practical game development; academic teacher training of at least ten weeks’ duration, or corresponding knowledge and demonstrated teaching expertise. If special reasons apply, the appointee may attend the academic teacher training during the first year of employment. Ability to teach in English is a requirement.
Assessment criteria
The criteria are documented experience of teaching and administrative work in the area of game design or game development; experience of personal work in game design and/or activity in the game-design industry; thoroughness; skill in cooperating with others; experience of a project-oriented way of working; and good self-expression in spoken and written English. Particular emphasis will be laid on teaching expertise, which means that an applicant who is a more accomplished teacher will take precedence over one with greater research expertise. However, research experience in game design or relevant fields that are compatible with the department’s Games & Society focus is definitively considered a plus, since the department strongly strives towards research-education integration.
In this recruitment, the University will mainly consider candidates who, after an overall assessment of their expertise and teaching skill, as well as documented qualifications, are judged to have the best capacity to implement and develop the duties concerned and contribute to favourable development of the work.
