The department of materials science and engineering aims to be an environment for successful and valuable research and education with a focus on material science solutions for important social challenges. Our department offer an exciting place to work at with research in a broad technology related field, from basic research to large-scale applied research, and close contact with the students through the department's involvement in many engineering programmes. We are looking for talented and dedicated teachers, researchers and graduate students.
You will be based in Prof. Cecilia Persson's research group, which specializes in developing and evaluating new biomaterials for future use in primarily orthopedics (http://www.materialvetenskap.uu.se/bms/).
The position includes work within AddLife, which is a newly funded VINNOVA Competence Centre that gathers more than 20 partners in academia, industry and the public sector to support competence development in additive manufacturing for the life sciences. The centre is led by Prof. Persson and is funded by academia, industry and VINNOVA in equal parts, with a total budget of approx. 100 MSEK and will run for 5 years in a first instance, between 2020-2024, and engage experts within academia and industry with a passion for 3D-printing with the ultimate goal of developing new technologies to improve people’s lives. www.uu.se/en/research/addlife
Description of subject area of the employment:
Additive Manufacturing has recently emerged as an attractive technology for enabling e.g. the development of new materials, as well as patient-specific design of implants. Additive manufacturing is relevant for all material categories. It can be used to develop materials and implants made of metals, polymers or ceramics as well as composites. It can also enable a direct 3D distribution of cells in a material, which could be an attractive alternative for not only future tissue regeneration, but also for creating more complex models for in vitro characterization. Indeed, in Additive Manufacturing for the Life Sciences, characterization of the biocompatibility of new materials and implants is of high importance. This position combines materials science with biology, with a specific focus on additive manufacturing for the life sciences.
Duties:
Appointment Period:
The position can be held for a maximum of six years. An Assistant Professor can apply for promotion to Associate Professor. If the Assistant Professor is deemed suitable and fulfills the criteria for promotion established by the Faculty Board he/she shall be promoted to and employed as Associate Professor.
Qualifications Required:
Assessment Criteria/Ranking of applicants that fulfil the above-mentioned qualifications required
The ranking of eligible applicants will be based primarily on research and teaching expertise, of which weight will be primarily given to research expertise.
Research Expertise comprises research merits as well as the applicant´s potential to contribute to the future development of both research and teaching. In assessing research expertise research quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of research, primarily in regard to depth and breadth, must also be afforded consideration. In assessing research expertise special weight will be attached to research merits in biomaterials and biological characterization of materials and implants. Experience of these aspects in additive manufacturing is of special weight. Documented ability for productive research collaboration and ability to successfully lead projects will be given special weight.
Teaching Expertise comprises educational and teaching qualifications. In assessing teaching expertise teaching quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, must also be afforded consideration. In assessing teaching expertise special weight will be attached to merits in teaching in materials science, biomaterials or similar.
Administrative Expertise is important for the employment and will be given consideration. Administrative expertise is demonstrated, for example, through the capacity to plan, organise, and prioritise work in an efficient and task-related manner as well as through the ability to assign and observe time frames.
Collaboration Expertise is important and will be afforded consideration. Collaborative expertise is demonstrated by the ability and skill of planning, organizing and implementing interaction with the surrounding community. Popular publications, public debate and lectures are examples of forms of interaction with the surrounding community. Other examples of collaboration are patent applications, commercialization and industrial cooperation. The ability to translate knowledge sharing with the surrounding community into activities of importance to the education's development and quality is part of the collaboration expertise.
Other Expertise: Considering the content of the research projects and the teaching, a master’s degree, or equivalent, in engineering with a specialization in materials science, materials engineering, material chemistry, material physics or similar is of merit.
All merits must be documented in a manner that makes it possible to assess both quality and scope.
In filling this position the university aims to appoint the applicant who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of her/his competence and expertise, is judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations.
Further information
In an overall assessment of the applicant’s qualifications, parental leave, part-time work relating to care of children, union assignments, military service, or the like are to be regarded as work experience.
