The Department of Linguistics and Philology carries out research and teaching within a range of languages and language-adjacent areas and offers an international working environment. The department’s areas of expertise cover many classical as well as modern languages and cultures in large areas of Europe, Asia and Africa, in addition to computational linguistics and general linguistics. Courses are offered at Bachelor’s, Master’s, and doctoral level.

Context: Due to unexpected staff turnover, a three year position as researcher has become available in the Swedish Riksbankens Jubileumsfond Project Cultural Evolution of Texts (2020–2023). The researcher will collaborate with the PI Michael Dunn and other team members. These researchers include experts on a diverse set of text traditions: collections of Early Christian aphorisms, Zoroastrian oral liturgies, and runic calendar staves from Scandinavia.

Responsibilities: Development of methods for analysing culturally transmitted text traditions. We[UB1]  are seeking a colleague who is able to develop and communicate ideas across disciplines, and engage productively with the humanities researchers with the relevant expertise in the philological aspects of the project. The researcher will be responsible for taking the lead in developing new directions for the project from quantitative/evolutionary perspectives.

Requirements:

  • PhD dissertation within a relevant area, such as linguistics, computer science, biology, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated experience in cross-disciplinary research collaboration
  • Demonstrated experience in comparative or phylogenetic methods within historical linguistics or similar cultural-evolutionary sciences
  • Programming in Python and R

Additional qualifications:

  • Experience working with linguistic or text data
  • Experience working with reticulate (non-treelike) evolutionary models, such as ABC or phylogenetic network methods
  • Researchers at the Department of Linguistics and Philology [MOU2]are encouraged to participate in teaching at up to 20%. Ideally, the candidate would be able to participate in teaching courses on general linguistics.
