Uppsala University, Department of Electrical Engineering

We are looking for a PhD student who wants to contribute to the transition to a sustainable transport system. The position is at the division of Electricity, department of Electrical Engineering, at the Ångström laboratory.

Project description: The energy transition in Sweden causes a large change for the transport sector astransports become more and more electrified. This PhD project aims at developing new environmentally friendly electric motors and thus contribute to the electrification of the transport sector. The majority of electric motors used for  lectromobility have permanent magnets with rare earth metals. This research
project aims at designing electric motors without rare earth metals for electromobility with a special focus on Scania's applications in heavy transport such as buses and trucks. Different types of electric motors will be designed and evaluated. Both electromagnetic and mechanical design will be studied.

Swedish Electromobility Centre is a national Centre of Excellence for emobility with partners from Swedish universities and Swedish industries. This research project will be performed in close collaboration with Scania CV AB in the framework of the Swedish Electromobility Centre, meaning that the PhD student will belong to a PhD student network with regular meetings, summer schools etc. The research group at Uppsala University has a long experience of research on different types of electrical machines as well as a large laboratory.

Duties: The work will mainly be carried out by FEM-based multiphysics simulations, but also includes design and construction of a prototype motor as well as experiments. The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which include participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).

Admission requirements: A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programs if he or she:
• has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
• has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or
• has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Requirements:
• Degree or equivalent as above in electrical engineering, engineering physics, energy systems or
similar.
• Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
• A strong motivation and ability to work individually is a merit.
• Experience from FEM-based simulations in for example Comsol or Ansys Maxwell is a merit. It is
also a merit with knowledge of electrical machines as well as experimental experience.

Application: Please use the link below. You should include a brief description of your research interests and relevant experience, a CV, copies of diplomas and certificates, thesis (or a draft thereof) and other relevant documents. You are encouraged to provide letter(s) of recommendation and contact information to reference persons.
