Uppsala University, Department of Peace and Conflict Research

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 80 persons are employed at the Department and at present some 300-400 students are enrolled every academic year. The department is now looking for a research assistant (full time position, 6 months employment), for the project "Civil Society in Peacemaking" with project leader Desiré Nilsson. The employment will start in October.

Project Description
The aim of the project is to create a new dataset about the role of civil society and political parties in peace negotiations, which will enable analysis of a series of issues concerning civil society involvement in peace talks in civil war. The project will collect data on civil society's role in the peace talks between the conflicting parties in the civil war, such as the type of civil society actor (e.g. women's organisations or religious actors) and how they were involved in the negotiations (e.g. such as observers or participating in parallel forums), as well as during the course of the process in which they participated.

Duties: 
Data collection and administrative tasks in the project "Civil Society in Peacemaking". The main work consists of collecting data on civil society's role in civil peace negotiations, but also do initial analysis of collected information, as well as editing and formatting of article manuscript.

Requirements:

  • For an advanced understanding of theories and concepts concerning war and peace as well as an in-depth understanding of the research process, the position requires that the applicant has a Master's degree in peace and conflict studies, or in a related subject
  • The position also requires good ability to work in a team and to work independently
  • Excellent English skills in both speech and writing, is also a requirement.

Additional qualifications:

  • Experience of data collection, especially in peace and conflict research or similar
  • Good knowledge of literature on peace negotiations and the role of civil society in peace processes in intrastate conflicts
  • Good knowledge of statistics and statistics programs.

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: 12 October 2020, or as otherwise agreed.
