Uppsala University, Department of Materials Science and Engineering

Temporary full-time employment 5 months

The position is at the Division of Microsystem Technology (MST) which is part of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering aims to be an environment for successful and valuable research and education with a focus on materials science solutions to important societal challenges. The MST division conducts research and teaching in miniaturized systems with applications in space, environment, medical technology and life sciences.

This position is advertised in the specialisation "MST for life sciences" led by Professor Maria Tenje. The research environment focuses on researching new and developing existing microsystems that enable basic scientific research in the life sciences.

Further information about the research group is available on the website: https://materialvetenskap.uu.se/research/microsystems-technology+/

Tasks: Research in organs-on-chip, which are microfluidic systems where cells can be cultured under fully controlled conditions. Specifically, the goal is to develop a microfluidic system with integrated electrodes to measure growth rate and barrier integrity of endothelial cells as a model of the blood-brain barrier. Development of new electrical measurement techniques to enable 1) more user-friendly systems 2) combined electrical and optical characterisation and 3) increased information density of obtained data.

The research places great demands on creativity, analytical ability and practical skills in microsystem technology and integrated electronics. In addition to research, supervision of Master’s thesis students and project based courses as well as communication of research results are also included as important elements in the employment.

It also includes following developments within the subject area and society in general in aspects that are important for the work at the university, as well as communicating your research results to both the public and a scientifically experienced audience.

Qualification requirements: Doctoral degree in technical physics, materials science, nanotechnology, medical technology or equivalent education in a similar area as well as solid knowledge and many years of experience in microsystems technology and integrated electronics. Excellent knowledge and documented experience in the manufacture of microsystems for culture of cells are also requirements.

We require good oral and written knowledge of English. We attach great importance to your personal qualities and you should be self-sufficient, have achieved scientific maturity and have a strong inner motivation to succeed in your research. You are not afraid to learn new techniques and methods from your colleagues, with whom you are also free to share your own new insights. It is important that you are pedagogical, structured and that you can work effectively both individually and in groups.

Documented ability to obtain research funding and experience of international collaboration is very meritorious.

Instructions for application: Your application must include:
