Uppsala University, Department of Materials Science and Engineering

Temporary full-time employment for 1 year with start January 2021.

The position is at the Division of Microsystem Technology (MST) which is part of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering aims to be an environment for successful and valuable research and education with a focus on materials science solutions to important societal challenges. The MST division conducts research and teaching in miniaturized systems with applications in space, environment, medical technology and life sciences.

This position is advertised in the specialisation "MST for life sciences" led by Professor Maria Tenje. The research environment focuses on researching new and developing existing microsystems that enable basic scientific research in the life sciences.

Further information about the research group is available on the website: www.materialvetenskap.uu.se/embla

Tasks: Research in mechano-biology, which is a research focus that aims to achieve an understanding of how different mechanical stimuli affect the development and growth of cells both in the healthy body and in different disease states. Development of so-called organs-on-chip systems where cells can be grown under controlled conditions. Specifically, the goal is to develop a microfluidic system for culturing epithelial cells as a model of the intestinal wall. The microfluidic system must also include the ability to subject the cells to regular mechanical compression.

The research places great demands on creativity, analytical ability and practical skills in microsystem technology. In addition to research, participation in the supervision of Doctoral students and Master's students as well as communication of research results are included as important elements in the employment.

It also includes following developments within the subject area and society in general in aspects that are important for the work at the university, as well as writing research applications in the area and communicating your research results to both the public and a scientifically experienced audience.

Qualification requirements: Doctoral degree in technical physics, materials science, nanotechnology, medical technology or equivalent education in a similar area as well as solid knowledge and many years of experience in microsystems technology and mechano-biology. Excellent knowledge and documented experience in the manufacture of microsystems for culture and external mechanical stimulation of cells are also requirements.

We require good oral and written knowledge of English. We attach great importance to your personal qualities and you should be self-sufficient, have achieved scientific maturity and have a strong inner motivation to succeed in your research. You are not afraid to learn new techniques and methods from your colleagues, with whom you are also free to share your own new insights. It is important that you are pedagogical, structured and that you can work effectively both individually and in groups.

Documented ability to obtain research funding and experience of international collaboration is very meritorious.

Instructions for application: Your application must include:

1) A short letter describing yourself, your research interests and why you are suitable for this position.
2) CV (max. 2 pages)
3) A copy of your doctoral degree and your course grades
4) Names and contact details (address, e-mail address and telephone number) of at least two reference persons.
5) List of relevant publications

The application can be written in English.
