The Department of Mathematics conducts research and provides education at undergraduate to graduate level in mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. The number of employees is 120, including 30 PhD students. The Department has three research programs: analysis and probability, algebra and geometry, applied mathematics and statistics.

Research project: The research assistant will work on a project titled Mobile Phone Data for Society and Privacy for the Individual: From the Conflict to a Synergy in Transport Flows Analysis. The project involves developing tools for analyzing human mobility data and then using this analysis to build tools to strike a balance between individual privacy and societal utility.

Duties: The main duty is the development of tools for analyzing movement of mobile devices using data. We are working together with the Research Center for Cyber Security at Tel Aviv University established by the State of Israel, the Prime Minister’s Office and Tel-Aviv University.  The research assistant will develop open source software to help solve dynamic traffic engineering problems with mathematical guarantees on privacy. The research assistant will also work on research papers and documentation of the tools and the underlying Markov control process models. 

Requirements: Research experience as evident by peer-reviewed publications. Minimum of BSc degree in mathematics or related area. A strong background in software engineering with public code repository, particularly in C++ and/or Scala. Ability to read mathematical research papers and implement algorithms independently.

Additional qualifications: Familiarity with fault-tolerant distributed computing in Apache Spark and familiarity with functional programming and scalable geospatial computing is highly desirable.

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: 1 October 2020 or as otherwise agreed.

Type of employment: Temporary position for six months.
