The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology is one of the most international, broad and distinguished biomolecular departments in Europe, comprising seven research programs covering subjects such as bioinformatics, microbiology, and biophysics.
The current position is located in the research group of Laura Gunn within Molecular Biophysics (for more information see https://icm.uu.se/molekylar-biofysik/ and https://lmb.icm.uu.se).
Duties: The employee will be a part of the ongoing research in the Gunn Lab, which aims to boost the efficiency of photosynthetic carbon assimilation by taking advantage of natural variation in the structure-function of carbon-fixing enzymes from different organisms. This position involves participation in an international collaboration to develop beam-sweeping fixed-target serial femtosecond crystallography (SFX) at the European XFEL (EuXFEL). The main duties are to conduct research. Teaching and/or administration duties (including coordinating with collaborators) may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours.
Requirements: For this position, you must have a PhD degree in Structural Biology or Biophysics, or an area that the employer considers to be equivalent. The position requires prior experience with recombinant protein expression and purification. A demonstrably high level of competence in macromolecular protein crystallography is essential. Candidates must have experience with processing crystal data and using structure determination and visualisation software (e.g. coot, ccp4, Phenix). Since the research is conducted in an international environment, excellent knowledge of spoken and written English is an absolute requirement. Personal characteristics such as interpersonal skills, curiosity, a passion for discovery, independence and an ability to work as part of a team are also important factors.
Merits: Prior experience in the following is considered advantageous, but not essential: (i) molecular and cell biology;
(ii) protein-ligand interactions;
(iii) data collection at X-ray failities (either syncrotron or XFEL);
(iv) basic biophysical/biochemical techniques for sample characterisation e.g. DLS (Dynamic Light Scattering), CD (Circular Dichroism), ITC (Isothermal Titration Calorimetry).
Application: Your application is preferably written in English and must contain:
Salary: Individual salary.
Starting date: As soon as possible or as otherwise agreed.
Type of employment: Temporary position of 24 months
Scope of employment: 100 %
