Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för geovetenskaper

The Department of Earth Sciences is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from sub-microscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. For more information see www.geo.uu.se

Project:

Innovative and cost-effective seismic methods are required to allow high-resolution imaging of structures hosting mineral deposits and also for their targeting at depths greater than 800 m. Maximizing the use of existing tunnels and boreholes around the mineralization is one way to obtain this. The geophysics program is currently running projects involving studies of major crustal structures of the Baltic Shield, urban geophysics, novel geophysical instruments and methods for deep mineral exploration, geological storage of CO2, and development of electromagnetic instruments and methods for near-surface and deep crustal-scale studies. The geophysics program runs its own ~ 700-channel (cabled and 1C/3C wireless), a state-of-the-art 120-3C seismic landstreamer acquisition system, and uses modern processing and imaging software. It is also well equipped with modern downhole logging equipment. The program also runs the Swedish National Seismic Network (SNSN), consisting of about 70 permanent broadband stations, and has an extensive equipment pool for passive field studies. Further information about the program and the department can be found at www.geo.uu.se.

Duties:

The researcher will conduct research within the SIT4ME EIT Raw Materials-funded project. A major component of the project involves combined active- and passive-source imaging at our Swedish mining site. The researcher will also work within a larger research team including experts from different countries and expected to also contribute to other external research projects within the program.

Requirements:

We are seeking a motivated candidate with strong interest in research who has a PhD degree in geophysics. The candidate should have experience and knowledge on reflection data imaging (active or noise interferometry), Matlab (or any equivalent), Seismic Unix, and shell scripting. Good oral and written proficiency in English is required.

Additional requirements:

The project includes extensive field work and the candidate should be willing to spend time in the field collecting data; a driving license may be needed. Well-organized and able to priorities when high peaks in labor, open-minded team player with good social skills.

In your application include your CV, certified copies of diplomas and certificates, and a personal letter describing yourself and your relevant experience (maximum 2 pages). The application should also contain a summary of your PhD thesis and eventual publications, and contact information for, or letters from at least two referees. In your cover letter specifically explain how much your experience fits the position.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
