The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities.

The senior research engineer position is placed in the Division of Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics at the Department of Physics and Astronomy. The research of the division is based on experimental studies of the electronic structure of various materials ranging from molecules and biomolecules to quantum and energy materials using x-ray-based methods. We invite applications for a position targeting the operation, maintenance and future development of the existing HELIOS ultrafast laser high-order harmonic generation (HHG) x-ray source for applications of time-resolved x-ray spectroscopy to molecules and condensed matter.

Duties: The main part of the work will be to operate, maintain and develop the femtosecond x-ray source based on HHG in the laboratory at the division. This includes maintaining and operating the femtosecond Ti:Sa laser system used to drive the HHG source and to generate excitation pulses of tunable wavelength, supporting co-workers and collaborators of the division in ultrafast x-ray experiments using this source, further developing the ultrafast laser and HHG x-ray sources to enable experiments at higher x-ray photon energies as currently used, and supporting the developments of new x-ray experimental capabilities at the HHG source.

Requirements: To qualify for the position, you must have a PhD degree in physics. Proven extensive experience in maintaining and operating ultrafast femtosecond amplified Ti:Sa laser systems and in maintaining and operating ultra-high vacuum systems are required. Extensive experience in generating high-order harmonics from femtosecond laser pulses and performing ultrafast x-ray experiments with HHG sources are necessary requirements as well. Fluency in both written and spoken English is an absolute prerequisite.

Additional qualifications: Extra attention will be paid to experience with time-resolved x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and x-ray absorption spectroscopy and with operating state-of-the-art photoelectron detection systems such as ArTOF spectrometers currently in use in the HELIOS lab. Attention will also be paid to experience in wavelength conversion of femtosecond laser pulses for tunable excitation in the UV/Vis energy range and in the generation of long-wavelength driver pulses for extending the energy range of the HHG source.
