The Department of Electrical Engineering has a leading position in research and education. The Department has an international environment with about 130 employees at the Ångström Laboratory.
Two doctoral students will be recruited for the Division of Signals and Systems. The Division conducts leading research over different areas, which include signal processing, control engineering, cybersecurity of control systems, wireless communication, energy harvesting sensor networks, and pedagogy and didactics in engineering.
The recruited doctoral students will join the research group focused on cybersecurity of control systems. Our group develops new theory and methodologies that support the analysis and design of secure and reliable control systems in safety-critical applications, such as water management, electric power systems, and medical treatment systems. Information about our research group and ongoing projects is available at this website: http://www.signal.uu.se/Research/Security.html
Project description: The research projects for the advertised positions will be within the areas of control engineering, cybersecurity, and reinforcement learning. The application area will be focused on digital control systems operated over communication networks that may be subject to cyber-attacks. As a member of a cross-disciplinary team, you will contribute to providing solutions for enhancing the security and resilience of control systems.
These positions will have a focus on developing novel system analysis and design methodologies that jointly consider the impact and detectability of attacks under uncertainty, taking inspiration from model-based approaches related to optimal fault detection and optimal robust control, and from data-driven solutions such as reinforcement learning. The developed methods shall support the design of anomaly detection and control algorithms for improved security and resilience, which will be validated on experimental testbeds and though numerical simulations.
Duties: Your main responsibility will be to pursue your own doctoral studies, which includes participation in the research project and in doctoral education. The employment is time-limited following the regulations for PhD employment in the Higher Education Ordinance. The position is limited to 5 years, which may also include teaching and other departmental duties (no exceeding 20%).
Eligibility requirements: To be admitted to postgraduate education, the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with the following:
Additional qualifications: A specialization in control systems, applied mathematics, or machine learning is an asset. Knowledge in cybersecurity, anomaly detection, robust control or reinforcement learning is a merit, but not a requirement.
Other important personal qualities are openness to interdisciplinary research, creativity, correctness, and structured approach. The selection of applicants will be based on their ability to:
Following the eligibility requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal characteristics and personal fitness to the position.
Application: Please use the link below. The application should include all of the following items:
Applications may be submitted by candidates that have not fully completed the Master of Science degree (or equivalent), however candidates must state when they expect to graduate. All applicants should state the earliest feasible starting date of employment.
Rules governing PhD candidates are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala university's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/search/?hits=30&languageId=1&search-language_en=English
