Uppsala universitet, Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University is Sweden's largest and most versatile earth science department. We lead education and research in Geophysics; Air, water and landscape sciences; Natural resources and sustainable development; Mineralogy, petrology and tectonics; Paleobiology as well as Wind energy. More than 2,200 students attend our education at the undergraduate and graduate levels each year. We are around 250 employees and have over 30 nationalities represented at the department, in addition to Uppsala, also at Campus Gotland.

The Programme for Palaeobiology encompasses education and research in a broad range of palaeobiological topics, including the Proterozoic Biosphere, the origin and early evolution of animals, and the palaeobiology of Caenozoic nanoplankton. Teaching responsibilities are primarily within the Bachelor and Master Programmes in Earth Sciences and Palaeobiology. More information on the programme can be found at http://www.geo.uu.se/research/palaeobiology/

Duties/Project description: This project focus is to study Precambrian life through a broad interdisciplinary approach, involving geochemistry, paleontology, chemistry and material sciences. The approach is to understand the earliest life on earth by investigating the geochemistry and paleontology of Precambrian rocks in Sweden, Finland and north-west European part of Russia through field analyses, laboratory experiments and extensive morphological and chemical analyses. The laboratory experiments will be focused on biomorph precipitation under natural/neutral conditions as a method to simulate abiotic precipitation of bio-mimicking morphologies. The successful candidate will be expected to be able to use and understand Raman Spectroscopy, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance, wet chemistry, HF work and imaging techniques such as optical microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy. She or he will also be asked to undertake teaching up to 20% of their time. Field work may be undertaken if necessary.

Requirements: The successful candidate will have a Masters degree or equivalent in an earth or biological science.  Ability to initiate and organize research, to cooperate and good communication skills are required. Strong motivation and capacity for independent work are important qualities. The applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Additional qualifications: Experience working with EPR and biomorphs is a merit. The candidate’s aptitude in interacting with the surrounding community, informing people about research and development work are also important.

Application: Applications should include a brief description of research interests and relevant experience, a CV, copies of diplomas and certificates, thesis as well as other relevant documents that the applicant wishes to refer to as well as the names of two referees who know you well.
