Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from sub-microscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department's programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet). Duties/Project description: The position is funded by the project ShipTRASE; Global shipping: Linking policy and economics to biogeochemical cycling and air-sea interaction. In ShipTRASE, the environmental, economic and legal aspects of both near-term and long-term solutions to shipping emission reduction and control mechanisms will be analysed. The project is a collaboration between Uppsala university, Chalmers university of Technology, GEOMAR, Kiel University and Polytechnic School of Paris, and European Institute for Marine Studies. The work will include development of future scenarios of shipping and using numerical models for evaluating the impact of those scenarios on climate and environment.

Requirements: To qualify for an employment as a postdoctoral researcher you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in meteorology, oceanography, statistics or computational science or similar. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. Good knowledge of English in both speech and writing is required.

Additional qualifications: Experience in numerical modelling, dispersion modelling is a merit. Experience with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model and/or regional or global climate modelling is also a merit. Experience in working with scientific analysis of ocean and climate data  and understanding of ocean/climate processes is beneficial as is also good programming skills in.

Salary: Individual salary.
 
Starting date: 01-10-2020 or as otherwise agreed.

Type of employment: Temporary position for two years according to central collective agreement.
