We are now seeking a Deputy Vice-Chancellor who, together with the Vice-Chancellor, can lead the University’s development to meet contemporary and future global challenges and to enhance the University’s status and the confidence it inspires.

The position

Together with the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor will lead the University during the upcoming term of office 1 January 2021 – 31 December 2026. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor will be appointed by the University Board, following a proposal from the Recruitment Committee and interviews with the Electoral College.

The University Board has adopted the following person specification for the role of Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

Background

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor

  • will be a professor who is well established in the national and international research community;
  • will have actively and successfully engaged in both research and education at various levels, and in collaboration with the wider community;
  • will have solid experience of academic leadership and management.

Leadership and management

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor will have the ability to:

  • demonstrate clear, inspiring and cooperative leadership based on great personal integrity, sound judgement, an ethical attitude and moral courage.
  • uphold and promote collegial processes and academic freedom;
  • promote a good work environment, equal opportunities and equal treatment throughout the University;
  • support and protect broad student influence at all levels, conduct an ongoing dialogue with student representatives, and take an active interest in the University’s students in terms of both their education and student life; - establish and deepen relations and contacts with regional, national and international actors of importance to the University;
  • be a prominent figure who actively supports the involvement of the University in contemporary challenges and asserts and defends democratic principles, scientific approaches and the integrity of research in all situations where this is necessary;
  • have a visible presence among employees and students.

The Vice-Chancellor and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor should complement one another (in terms of skills, field and gender) and have a reasonable degree of agreement on the University’s challenges and future development.

A prerequisite for appointment as Deputy Vice-Chancellor is that the person in question has a position at Uppsala University.

Salary supplement: According to the guidelines for salary supplement and other conditions for special assignments and change of salary for promotion and new competence, UFV 2019/1166.

Starting date: January 1st 2021

Form of appointment: The appointment is for a period of six years, with the possibility of two three-year extensions.

Scope of appointment: 80 - 100 % by appointment
