Uppsala University, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology at Uppsala University is one of Europe’s most international, interdisciplinary, and successful research departments in molecular biosciences. The department's research is divided into six research programs covering everything from cell biology to biophysics and structural biology.

The position is located in Johan Elf's research group. The Elf group works across the borders of conventional research disciplines to investigate life at the molecular level. We build physical models of central biological processes and develop different measurement methods to test these in living cells. The research depends strongly on the collaboration of experts from many different scientific fields, and the group hosts specialists in microbiology, biochemistry, genetics as well as microfluidics, optics, and image analysis. More details about the group and our research interests can be found on our website: https://www.icm.uu.se/molecular-systems-biology/elf-lab/.

Main work duties: The project coordinator will support the various effort of the research group. You will participate actively in all project phases, from grant application and recruitment to reporting and follow-up, and you will act as a contact person for the group members in administrative matters. The workload is occasionally high, so you should also be able to cope with temporary high pressure and to work against deadlines. You will help writing scientific and popular science texts and other information material, and you will be responsible for communication via the group's website, social media, and different outreach events. Finally, you will support the group leader in organizing scientific symposiums, conferences and meetings.

As a project coordinator you will:

  • Participate actively in the application and reporting of research grants.
  • Manage research communication as part of the third assignment.
  • Assist in the organization of scientific meetings and major conferences.
  • Assist in coordinating the research and education activities of the group members.
  • Serve as the contact person for the team members in administrative matters.
  • Manage the content and maintenance of the group's website.
  • Help with budgeting and budget follow up.
  • Coordinate the procurement of lab equipment.
  • Assist with recruitment and other HR issues, together with the department's HR manager.

Qualifications required: We are looking for a candidate with a PhD in microbiology, biophysics, biotechnology or an, from our perspective, equivalent field of research, to ensure a good understanding of how research is conducted in this academic field and within the academic world. You are service-minded and have a good ability to develop and maintain good professional relationships. It is important that you are flexible and that you can handle new tasks and priorities with a short notice. The workload is occasionally high, so you should also be able to cope with temporary high pressure and to work against deadlines. Since you will be responsible for project and administrative management of a large research group, the ability to work independently and take great responsibility for your work duties is essential. Since the position is located in an international research environment, very good knowledge of Swedish and English, both in speech and in writing, is a prerequisite. You will also, to a large extent, work with social communication and compile facts and popular science texts concerning the group's research area. Therefore previous experience of similar work duties with in the group's research area is a requirement, so you can work without hindrance.

Desirable qualifications: Experience in research administration, financial administration, and HR issues are meriting, as is experience with graphic design.

Application: The application must include a CV, full publication list, copies of diplomas and certificates, contact details of two references, and a personal letter including a short description of how the candidate meets the required qualifications for the post.

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: As soon as possible or otherwise agreed.
