The current position is located within the research group of Sanna Koskiniemi (https://www.icm.uu.se/microbiology/koskiniemi-lab/), within the micro biology program.
Project description: The proposed project will take place in an active research group at the department of Cell and Molecular biology. The focus of this research group lies in understanding the role of bacterial toxin delivery systems in biology. Bacterial toxin delivery (e.g. bacteriocins, type 6 secretion and contact-dependent growth inhibition systems) has previously been shown to be important for antagonistic interactions, allowing bacteria with these systems a competitive advantage in environments where resources for growth are scarce and shared with other bacteria. In this project the focus is to investigate how eukaryotic homologs of toxin delivery systems affects multi-cellular behavior, communication and lifestyle of eukaryotic microorganisms. Model organisms used in the project are different species of Dictyostelia and C.elegans.
Duties: The applicant is expected to drive multiple ambitious projects within the area. Duties include general microbiology and molecular biology work in the laboratory. Bioinformatic analyses such as comparative genomics as well as analysis of transcriptomics and proteomics data sets are included. Oral presentation and writing/editing of scientific papers and grant applications are part of the position. Teaching (up to 20%) can become included depending on the needs of the microbiology program.
Qualifications: We are looking for highly-motivated applicants with a PhD degree in a microbiology, molecular biology or another degree that the employer sees as equivalent to these PhD degrees. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.
The candidate is expected to be able to work independently and to have a strong interest in evolution of multi-cellularity. In addition, the candidate is expected to take own initiatives as well as to collaborate with colleagues both within and outside of the research group. Ability to perform advanced microbiological and molecular biological tasks such as construction of genetic mutants in one of the model organisms used as well as bioinformatic analyses of transcriptomic and proteomic data sets as well as of comparative genomics. The position is in an international context so good oral and written communication skills in English are essential. Finally, significant weight will be given to personal suitability such as; analytical and organizational skills, personal maturity, ability to work with others, take initiatives, and to show good judgement.
