Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities.

Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application: Researcher position in Theory of Magnetic Materials at the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Starting date: September 2020. Research area: Materials Theory.

The Division of Materials Theory is known to have a world-class research environment in solid state theory, including both numerical and analytical models. The research is focused on electronic structures, magnetism, topological phases of matter, correlated phenomena and green energy solutions.

The researcher will be part of a joint experimental and theoretical consortium focusing on finding magnetic materials for green energy solutions. This involves research on magneto caloric materials including magnetic high entropy alloys as well as rare-earth free permanent magnets. The researcher will be involved in data-mining techniques to identify search criteria to identify novel functional materials. The tools to be used are primarily electronic structure theory coupled to atomistic spin- and lattice-dynamics. Interaction with experimental partners of the consortium is an important part of the research.

The applicant is expected to have a PhD degree in Physics or Materials Science, with a good background in solid-state physics and theory in general and documented experience in alloy theory and computational modeling of magnetic materials. The application should include a statement of research interest, CV, certificates of exams, degrees and grades, a copy of the PhD thesis, or equivalent, published articles and other relevant materials, if available. Also, letter(s) of recommendation can be included.

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: 01-09-2020 or as otherwise agreed.

Type of employment: Temporary position ending 31-08-2022.
