Uppsala University, Department of Peace and Conflict Research

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer Courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 80 persons are employed at the Department and at present some 300-400 students are enrolled every academic year. Courses offered include undergraduate and postgraduate courses, as well as a Ph. D. programme. For more information, visit http://www.pcr.uu.se.

The Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) has recorded ongoing violent conflicts since the 1970s. The data provided is one of the most accurate and well-used data-sources on global armed conflicts and its definition of armed conflict is becoming a standard in how conflicts are systematically defined and studied.

UCDP is looking for two (or more) research assistants for 7 months employment, starting in September 2020.

Work assignments: The tasks consist of assisting the project management mainly by coding violent events from news articles and other sources into the UCDP's database. Text writing for the UCDP Encyclopedia will also be included in the tasks. Other tasks may be added based on UCDP needs.

Qualification requirements:

  • Bachelor degree in peace and conflict studies or equivalent field
  • Very good knowledge of political violence and theories of peace and conflict
  • Good knowledge of UCDP and its definitions
  • Documented ability to work independently
  • Very good English in speech and writing
  • Good analytical skills
  • Good ability to collaborate

Desirable / meritorious in general:

  • Studies at advanced level in peace and conflict studies
  • Experience of similar data collection work in the field of conflict
  • Experience of data management, incl. data visualization
  • Proficiency in R or equivalent
