Uppsala University, Department of Materials Science and Engineering

EMBLA (Enabling Microtechnologies for Biomedical and Life Science Applications) is a research group in the Division of Microsystem Technology (MST) at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, which focuses on developing new and optimising existing methods for the production of microfluidic systems that can be used in the life sciences. In order to further develop different microfluidic systems in glass that have recently been developed within the group, we are now seeking a postdoctoral fellow.

Work tasks: Work tasks include process development for fabrication of microfluidic systems in glass, both through wet and dry etching, with integrated electrodes. The processes will be able to define systems on both the micro- and nanoscale, which places great demands on accuracy and expertise in glass manufacturing and integration of electrodes. Verification of the functionality of the final systems, both in terms of flow characteristics and electrical properties, is also included as a task. The development and optimization of new process techniques required to manufacture these systems are also included in the tasks, as well as the construction of the necessary experimental set-up for its characterization and evaluation. In addition to research within this project, participation in the supervision of doctoral students and master's students as well as communication of research results are important elements of the employment.

Requirements: To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree.  The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

We are looking for a candidate with a doctorate in engineering sciences, engineering physics, materials science, nanotechnology or equivalent education in a similar area. We are looking for a candidate with several years of experience in clean room work where requirements for the position are excellent knowledge and documented experience in the manufacture of microsystems with special expertise in wet and dry etching of glass as well as the fabrication of integrated electrodes using thin film deposition. Documented experience and expertise in anodic and thermal bonding of glass structures are also requirements for the position. Documented experience and expertise in electrical characterization and analysis with thin film electrodes are also requirements for the position.

We attach great importance to your personal qualities and you must be self-sufficient, be able to lead and run projects and be able to collaborate with other researchers. It is important that you are pedagogical, structured and can work effectively both individually and in groups, when required under time pressure.
