The Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering consists of three divisions: Quality Science, Industrial Engineering and Management, and Civil Engineering and Built Environment. The department has around 80 employees and has research and education activities both at the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala and on Campus Gotland. The Department of Civil Engineering and Built Environment conducts research and education in construction engineering and other building sciences with a focus on energy in buildings and in the built environment. We provide courses in building physics, building design, energy efficiency in buildings, energy systems for buildings and infrastructure systems. We employ around 20 people and have several successful collaborations with industry and other organizations.

Uppsala University is establishing a new graduate school in sustainable development. The main mission of the graduate school is to conduct research based on key social challenges, where local relevance meets international excellence. The research will include changed energy systems, sustainable consumption and destinations development, and will address significant issues such as conservation and change, as well as the definition and management of resources. The graduate school is rooted in ongoing interdisciplinary collaborations in research and education, conducted in an international environment. Uppsala University Campus Gotland, where the graduate school is located, is a hub for the University's research and education in sustainability. We work with international partners, visiting researchers and local players with a special focus on knowledge development to cope with the changes needed to live well during climate change. As a PhD student, you will be part of this interdisciplinary research environment. You will also benefit from the courses, seminars and first-class doctoral supervision offered at the graduate school.

Duties/Project description: The purpose of this PhD project is to develop scenarios for the development of Gotland's future energy needs and to propose various alternatives to sustainably reduce the energy demand on the island. You will work in close collaboration with two other PhD projects, where your project focuses on modeling energy use and the other two PhD projects focus on wind resource modeling and planning.

The PhD project includes a broad survey of Gotland's current energy use and its historical development, modeling and simulation of energy use in buildings and transport infrastructure, as well as studies of how energy use may change in various future scenarios. This is done partly through the development of methods and models to quantify and predict energy needs for buildings and transport, and partly by applying them to the specific case of Gotland.

This PhD project is a part of the project “Gotland’s sustainable energy system transition: resources, demand and planning” where three PhD students are participating.

Since historic buildings make up a large part of Gotland's building stock, the project will be carried out in collaboration between the Division of Civil Engineering and Built Environment and the Department of Art Sciences, where the former provides expertise in modeling of buildings and transport and the latter contributes with expertise on energy efficiency in historic buildings.

The main task of a PhD student is his/her postgraduate education, which includes both participation in research projects and postgraduate courses. The duties may also include participation in teaching and other institutional work, at maximum 20% of full time.

Requirements: Master of Science in Energy Systems, Energy Technology, Sociotechnical Systems Engineering, Engineering Physics or equivalent. The application must include a personal letter with a description of the research interests, a CV, a copy of the degree diploma, a transcript of grades, and reference persons or letters of recommendation.

Additional qualifications: Good knowledge of programming in Matlab or Python is meriting, as is experience in modeling and simulation of buildings.

Admission requirements: A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programs if he or she:

  • has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
  • has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or
  • has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students.  

Starting date: 11-01-2021 or as otherwise agreed.
