The Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory conducts research and education in chemistry. The Department has over 300 active persons with about 200 employees in addition to guest researchers and students doing research at the master level. The annual turnover is about 200 million SEK. In the research program Physical Chemistry we conduct fundamental and goal oriented research mainly in photochemistry and chemical dynamics, laser spectroscopy as well as molecular and mesoscopic systems for solar energy conversion. Many of the professors in the Physical Chemistry program are part of the cross-disciplinary collaboration project of the Consortium for Artificial Photosynthesis.

Project description and duties: The PhD project is directed towards fundamental mechanistic studies in the area of photo-redox catalysis, using in particular time-resolved laser spectroscopy. The focus of interest is photoinduced and proton coupled electron transfer reactions, in molecular systems and in combinations of molecules and semiconductor materials. Research will be conducted in collaboration with other research groups within and outside the department, within a project financed by the K&A Wallenberg Foundation. The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. Teaching on undergraduate and Master level may be included, up to 20% of full time.

Admission requirements: A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if he or she:

• has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
• has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or
• has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Requirements: To be eligible for a PhD position, the applicant must hold a University degree in Chemistry, Physics or an equivalent subject, with a focus on physical chemistry, chemical physics or other relevant subjects. Strong motivation and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are important qualities. The applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English. 

Additional requirements: Knowledge and experience in photochemistry and time-resolved laser spectroscopy is an advantage.

Terms of employment: The rules about PhD students are found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5 §§1-7 and the university's rules and guidelines.

Salary: According to local agreement (Local collective agreement for doctoral students and students).
