Principal duties: Overall responsibility for leading and organizing research and educational development at the PhD level within the field of political science, as well as special responsibility for contributing to the development in a specific area of expertise. The position includes teaching and tutoring at all levels. The faculty’s aim is that about half the appointee’s working hours should be dedicated to her or his own research. The position comprises administrative assignments and relevant managerial duties at the Department and elsewhere in Uppsala University.
Qualifications required: The qualification requirements and the evaluation criteria for the appointment are as specified in Chapter Four, Section 3, of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance regarding excellence in research and teaching.
Applicants must have a proven academic record of accomplishment in research of high international and national quality, including demonstrable skills in academic leadership, initiating and planning independent research projects, and directing research programs. A proven track-record in obtaining competitive research grants is considered an important qualification.
Applicants should have a proven excellence in teaching skills and documented experience in teaching and tutoring. In addition, applicants should have a well-documented ability for supervision at the undergraduate, graduate and PhD levels. They should also meet the criteria stated in the Uppsala University's appointment regulations (section 33) and the Faculty of Social Sciences' complementary guidelines (section 2b).

Under Uppsala University's appointment regulations, applicants must also fulfil the general eligibility requirement for teachers and possess the personal qualities necessary to perform their teaching duties to a satisfactory standard.

It is desirable that applicants possess the ability to teach in both Swedish and English. However, a successful candidate, who is not able to teach in one of these languages at the time of taking up the position, will be offered the possibility to acquire skills in that language within a reasonable period of time after commencing the employment.

Assessment of research and teaching skills: The criteria for the assessment of the skills pertaining to this appointment will be the level of the skills which are required for the eligibility of employment as academic teacher at Uppsala University.

Regarding the appointment of Professor in Political Science at the Department of Government, the assessment will in the first place be based on the applicants’ expertise in research and teaching, with special emphasis on the former. However, the two assessment criteria taken together could result in a candidate deemed considerably superior in teaching expertise and thus ranked higher than a candidate with superior research expertise.

The applicant's research expertise will be assessed on the basis of the quality of his or her research record which will be accorded the highest importance. The scope of the applicant's research, both in terms of breadth and depth, will also be accorded importance. The applicant's overall contribution to national and international scientific communities will be assessed based on the quality and quantity of publication in the most relevant publication channels for the field. In the assessment of the requirement for international qualifications, the nature and specific conditions of the subject area will be taken into account.

Research expertise should be demonstrated through independent research that significantly exceeds the requirements of a senior lecturer in terms of both quality and quantity.

Unless special circumstances apply, the applicant should have served as the principal supervisor for at least one PhD student up until the completion of the said student’s doctoral thesis.

The applicant's teaching expertise will be assessed as thoroughly as his or her research expertise. In assessing the applicant's teaching expertise, the quality of the teaching will be accorded the highest importance. The extent of the applicant’s teaching experience, both in terms of breadth and depth, is also accorded importance. Furthermore, consideration will be given to the applicant’s proven ability to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching and tutoring, as well as the applicant’s’ ability to use up-to-date research in teaching within a relevant field, the didactics pertaining to that subject area, and the current practice in teaching and learning in higher education.

Assessment criteria, additional skills: Candidates must also possess the necessary administrative and other skills relevant to his or her specific field of expertise as well as pertaining to the duties of the position. In addition, the applicant’s ability to take responsibility for various tasks, to lead and develop core activities at the Department and to initiate collaborations both within and outside the Department will be considered. Attention will also be given to the applicant’s ability to interact with the surrounding community to disseminate new research results and discuss matters relevant to higher education. The applicant’s proven leadership ability and experience in leading academic organizations will be considered a merit.

When Uppsala University appoints new academic staff, successful candidates are those who, on the basis of a qualitative assessment of the whole range of merits, are considered to possess the greatest potential to carry out relevant duties and departmental activities and contribute to a positive overall development of the Department.

Applicants' merits must be documented in a manner that makes it possible to assess both quality and scope.

The Recruitment Committee may use interviews, trial-lectures and recommendations. Applicants should therefore submit a list of referees with insight into their professional skills and personal qualities that are of relevance to the position, e.g. ability to cooperate, ability to lead and preferred working methods.

Personal circumstances (such as full or part-time parental leave, trade union appointments, military service, or other) that may benefit the applicants in the assessment of qualifications should be included in the list of qualifications and experience (Curriculum Vitae).
