Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för Speldesign

Uppsala University’s Department of Game Design is located at Campus Gotland, which has the best of two worlds: the broad range and high status of the full-scale University’s education and research and the unique study environment at a small-scale campus. Here, education in the areas of game development and game design is provided, and research focusing on basic issues in game design is under way.

The Department offers education in the principal area of game design, with four Bachelor (BA) degree programmes (Game Design, Game Design and Graphics, Game Design and Programming, and Game Design and Project Management) and a Master (MA) degree programme in Game Design. The Department also offers freestanding courses in game design, graphics and game programming.

Applications are invited for a temporary position as Lecturer to reinforce our teaching team in Autumn Semester 2020.

Duties

The position includes teaching and tasks relating to course coordination, examination, development and administration. Teaching will take place in freestanding courses, mainly in animation and 2D, on campus and at a distance, but also some course and in the game design study programmes.

Development work primarily involves developing the Bachelor programmes in game design. The appointee will, moreover, take part in the Department’s internal work, which requires being largely present at the workplace. Duties also include developing the appointee’s own skills and monitoring development of the appointee’s own subject area and the development of society in general.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a lecturer, a person must at least hold a Bachelor’s degree with relevant subject specialisation; have demonstrated teaching expertise; possess solid knowledge of graphic production for game development; and have completed ten weeks’ training as a teacher in higher education or otherwise acquired corresponding knowledge. An ability to teach both in Swedish and English is a requirement.

The applicant must have the personal characteristics required to fulfil the requirements of the position well: an ability to work well with others, take the initiative and assume responsibility for personal tasks, and to work in a structured way by planning, organising and prioritising work efficiently and adhering to established time limits. Experience of project-oriented work and a good ability to express oneself well in speech and writing, in both Swedish and English, are also required.

Desirable and/or meritorious qualifications

Documented experience of teaching in graphics and animation in the field of game design and/or game development is a meritorious qualification. Experience of personal artistic activity and/or personal activity in the game sector and knowledge of requirements for implementation and production of graphics in a game development context are also meritorious.

Assessment criteria

In the selection among eligible applicants, the main emphasis will be laid on teaching expertise. “Teaching expertise” refers to qualifications in education and teaching. In the assessment of teaching expertise, the quality of teaching will be the primary consideration. Weight will also be assigned to the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop education and teaching.

Particular emphasis will be laid on teaching skill. Accordingly, an applicant who is more skilful in teaching will have precedence over an applicant with superior academic qualifications.

In this recruitment, the University will mainly consider candidates who, after a qualitative assessment of their expertise and skill, are judged to have the best capacity to implement and develop the duties concerned, and contribute to favourable development of the work, as staff members with an active presence at the Department.

All qualifications must be documented so that both their quality and their scope can be assessed.
