Duties/Project description: The project concerns development of concepts and routes for obtaining active control of light using nanomagnetic architectures. We will use magnetism to form adaptive and reconfigurable flat optical devices using a novel class of magnets – two-dimensional lattices of single-domain nano-magnets – as a means to achieve control. Magneto-static interactions between the nano-magnets, will be used to obtain collective magnetic order and dynamics. Furthermore, the magnetic order can be controlled and reconfigured, using external stimuli such as magnetic fields, temperature or opto-magnetic effects. The nano-magnets can be used to obtain a phase grating for scattered light, since magneto-optical effects impose local changes on the polarization and phase of the optical wavefronts across the metasurface. Crucially, this grating structure is defined by the degree and nature of the magnetic order of the nano-magnets. We aim to elucidate the fundamentals of light scattering from magneto-optical metasurfaces, relating it to the magnetic order and dynamics. The project is a collaboration between experimental and theoretical groups in Uppsala.

You will participate in experimental work in nanofabrication of nanomagnetic arrays and characterize them with magneto-optical spectroscopy and scattering techniques. Furthermore, magnetic microscopy and magnetization dynamics studies will be included in the project.

Requirements: Applicants should have a degree of Masters of Science in Physics, Chemistry, or Materials Science. Good knowledge of the English language in writing and speaking as well as the eagerness to learn the Swedish language is mandatory. The position will require work at international facilities, such as neutron and synchrotron sources as well as using the excellent laboratories in Uppsala.

Additional qualifications: Good computer skills are a merit, as well as good knowledge of condensed matter physics, mathematics and practical laboratory experience.
