Uppsala University, Department of Pharmacy

Uppsala University hereby declares a position to pursue PhD studies in pharmaceutical sciences open for applications. The PhD project is to be conducted in the Pharmaceutics research group, localized at Uppsala Biomedical Center. The project is a part of the science program of SweDeliver. SweDeliver is a scientific network of Uppsala University and about 15 industrial partners in the form of a Vinnova competence center. Drug delivery is a research area focusing on the delivery of pharmacologically active substances to the body target with the right dose and duration. A central drug delivery question is how the drug should be formulated into a product and how this product should be manufactured. In the SweDeliver center, the research projects are organized under three drug delivery platforms, i.e. parenteral, oral and pulmonary drug delivery. The PhD project is run within the oral drug delivery platform, i.e. drug delivery systems for administration via the mouth.

Duties/Project description: Pressure shaping of agglomerates. When manufacturing solid oral preparations, it is often advantageous to bond small drug and excipient particles together to form larger secondary particles called granules. This can be done by subjecting a powder bed to an applied pressure. This way of making granules by pressure shaping has attracted a considerable interest in recent years, especially since the process can be made continuous, which enables precise quality control already during manufacturing. Within the research group Pharmaceutics, we have studied the properties of granules for a long time. We have also studied tableting in detail and computational and mathematical models of this process. The purpose of this PhD project is to increase the knowledge of how the properties of granules made by pressure shaping depend on the applied stress, both during loading and unloading, and to develop computational or mathematical tools to model these processes at the particle level. New knowledge in this area is expected to lead to more efficient manufacturing processes and improved quality of solid oral preparations.

The position is a 4-year full-time employment and the student. The position might also entail teaching and other assignments up to 20% of the full-time position (extending the position proportionally).

Requirements: To be eligible for the position, the candidate must have at least 240 credits (hp), among which 60 credits (hp) should be on advanced level, university education in relevant subjects. Example of suitable educations are a M.Sc. degree or equivalent in pharmacy, drug development, chemical engineering and applied physics. Information about the PhD studies can be found at: http://www2.medfarm.uu.se/utbildning/forskarniva/.

We are looking for a candidate with an interest in and experience of laboratory and/or theoretical work. The candidate is expected to collaborate with national and international colleagues both within and outside of the group. Good ability to master English in written and oral form is thus a requirement.
