Uppsala University, Department of Peace and Conflict Research

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 80 persons are employed at the Department and at present some 300-400 students are enrolled every academic year. Duties: The tasks consist of assisting the UCDP management with the projects “Mapping Violence in Syria” (project leader Margareta Sollenberg) and “Cultural Violence and Civilian Casualties: Spatial and temporal analysis of social disintegration in Syria, 2014-17”. The former concerns the conflicts in Syria, and the main task will be to go through Arabic sources and to code violent events into UCDP's online database. The latter project, which is carried out in collaboration with University of Virginia, also focuses on Syria, but is more geared towards finding and coding geographical coordinates for cultural heritage sites. In addition, the assistant will to some extent participate in UCDP’s regular workflow, by coding violent events in other countries than Syria as well as writing texts in UCDP’s encyclopedia.  

Requirements:

  • Master degree in Peace and Conflict studies or equivalent subject. A Master’s degree is needed to guarantee an advanced understanding of theories and concepts of war and peace, an in-depth understanding of the research process, and an experience of independent work
  • Very good documented knowledge of Arabic
  • Very good knowledge of the conflict/s/ in Syria, specifically in regard to conflict actors and conflict dynamics
  • Previous experience of similar data collection work in the field of conflict studies.
  • Very good English in speech and writing
  • Very good knowledge of UCDP and its definitions


Desirable / meritorious in general:
Experience of data collection, with a focus on Syria and the rest of the Middle East.

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: 1 August 2020, or as otherwise agreed.

Type of employment: Temporary position, ending 31 July 2021 (12 months).
