Uppsala University, Department of Economics

The Department of Economics is one of the largest departments within the Faculty of Social Sciences with approximately 100 employees from a dozen countries. Each year about 1,000 students participate in undergraduate (BA), graduate (MA) and PhD level courses. The research conducted at the department is mainly focused on labour economics, macroeconomics, political economics and public economics. Researchers at the department are frequently engaged as experts by the government and by the media, and interact with the society at large in a number of ways.

Duties: Research in economics, with a particular emphasis on empirical political economics, and teaching in economics, with a particular emphasis on empirical political economics and econometrics. Teaching includes course coordination, supervision and course administration. The position may also include administrative tasks. Teaching comprises up to 50 percent of the position.

Appointment period: The position as Associate Senior Lecturer may be held for up to four years with the possibility of promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Qualifications required: To be eligible for employment as an associate senior lecturer, applicants must hold a PhD and must meet the requirements for teaching skills. The applicant should have completed a PhD no more than five years before the application deadline. The applicant should have completed five weeks of department-relevant teacher training at the higher education level, be deemed to have equivalent knowledge, or complete such an education during the first two years of employment.

It is required that the educational skill, the scientific competence and the professional skill are relevant to the subject content of the employment and the tasks that will be included in the employment.

According to Uppsala University's appointment regulations, it is also a requirement that applicant possesses the personal qualities necessary to perform the duties associated with the position.

Applicants must have the ability to teach in English.

Assessment criteria: Special emphasis will be placed on research expertise. Due to the nature of the position, as temporary employment with the potential for promotion to a permanent position, the applicant’s research and teaching qualifications will be assessed primarily in qualitative terms. An applicant’s quantitative advantage, i.e. an applicant who has been working for a longer period of time, will thus not be decisive.

Research expertise: Research expertise refers to research qualifications. When assessing research expertise, special emphasis will be placed on research qualifications in empirical political economics. In the assessment of research expertise, primary consideration will be given to research quality. Importance will also be given to the independence and scope of research, in terms of both breadth and depth. Supervision of PhD-students will be given special emphasis.

Teaching expertise: Teaching expertise will be assessed as carefully as research expertise. Teaching skills refer to educational qualifications and teaching experience, and teaching quality will be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, will also be afforded consideration. Special emphasis will be placed on teaching experiences and ability to teach empirical political economics and econometrics at the PhD level.

Administrative skills and other proficiencies are also valuable for the position and will be given due weight. Administrative skills are demonstrated, among other things, through the ability to plan, organize and prioritize work effectively and in a purpose-adapted manner. The applicant’s ability to interact with both the scientific community, such as organization workshops and conferences, and the community at large will also be given consideration.

Additionally, special emphasis will be placed on the applicant’s potential to contribute to the future development of both research and education within empirical political economics and econometrics.

When Uppsala University appoints new teachers, the applicants selected are those who, following a qualitative total assessment of expertise and merits, are judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and contribute to a positive development of the department.

The Recruitment Committee may come to use interviews, trial-lectures and referrals. The applicant should therefore submit a list of referees with insight into the applicant’s professional skill as well as personal qualities that may be of relevance for the position, e.g. ability to cooperate, ability to lead and working methods.

Personal circumstances (such as full or part-time parental leave, trade union appointments, military service, or similar) that may benefit the applicants in the assessment of qualifications should be included in the list of qualifications and experience (Curriculum Vitae).

At present there are more employees with legal gender man than legal gender woman as associate senior lecturer at Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences. The university is striving for a more balanced distribution of legal gender within this category.
