Uppsala universitet,Institutionen för farmaceutisk biovetenskap

Department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences has 150 employees and a number of visiting researchers and fellow students. The department has twelve research groups with a common administration and we are doing research and teaching in pharmaceutical cell biology / biochemistry, pharmacology, pharmaceutical and drug addiction, pharmacotherapy, pharmacokinetics, pharmacometry, clinical pharmacy, bioinformatics, imaging mass spectrometry, molecular neuropharmacology, immunology, biological drugs / biotechnology as well as toxicology and drug safety. More information about the department and its activities can be found at www.farmbio.uu.se

Placement: The two PhD student positions are associated with the research group Pharmacometrics, Department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences, and will have a main focus on antibiotic treatment in bacterial infections. The candidates will be part of the MSCA/Marie Curie European Training Network (ETN) TIPAT: Training towards Innovative Personalized Antibiotic Therapy. TIPAT offers a cutting-edge training-by-research program for in total 15 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) in Europe who will investigate translation and integration of biological and pharmacological data related to drug-pathogen-host interactions towards personalized therapies. Central to the TIPAT research and training program of ESRs is the combination of state-of-the art quantitative modelling with approaches in clinical pharmacology, immunology and microbiology.

Duties: The projects will involve development of model-based strategies for integration of preclinical and clinical data to characterize the pharmacodynamic relationships for the antibacterial effects. Pharmacometric models will be developed based on pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles. The projects aim to increase the understanding of how preclinical results can be translated to clinical, and how the immune system is influencing the relationship. The possibilities to use biomarkers to individualize the therapy will be investigated. These types of studies are important for improving the predictions and advance antibiotic therapy for the individual patient. The data needed to build the model will come from in vitro and in vivo experiments as well as from clinical studies. One of the projects may also involve the conduct of a clinical study where the link between biomarkers and therapeutic response will be studied.

Requirements: The applicants should have an MSc degree in a relevant area, such as pharmaceutical sciences, or medicine, or other similar education with minimum 240 credits including courses in pharmacokinetics, physiology, and pharmacology.

The applicant should be highly motivated and have a genuine interest for research in the field of pharmacometrics and bacterial infections. The applicant is expected to have excellent skills in oral and written English.

The applicant should also have good collaboration skills since the project involves interaction between different research groups and 2-3 exchange periods (2 weeks to approx. 3 months each) at other Universities, regulatory agencies and/or companies. Moreover, the applicant should have the capability to drive the research project in a structured and methodological way.

In accordance with the requirements of the funder candidates must not have lived in or carried out their main activity (work or study) in the hosting country for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment start date. The research experience after completing the Master education cannot exceed 4 years.

Further information about the research-level education, eligibility requirements, and admission regulations can be found at http://www2.medfarm.uu.se/utbildning/forskarniva/. Applications will be ranked by the supervisors in consultation with the Department Research-level Education group. The committee for Research-level Education at the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy will admit the PhD student. Salaries will follow local guidelines at Uppsala University. Rules governing PhD candidates are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala university's rules and guidelines. The holders of PhD student position primarily devote their time to own research-level education. Other duties at the Department involving teaching and administrative tasks maybe included in the framework of the position (max 20%). The PhD program normally lasts for 4 years research, plus maximally one year of teaching.

Additional qualifications: Additional qualifications include experience of pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic modelling of antibiotics, and programming in R.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines

Application: The application should include (i) a motivation letter with a brief description of the candidate and research interests as well as experiences in relation to the requirements and qualifications listed above, and the topics pharmacometrics, antibiotics, clinical trials and/or immune response, (ii) the candidate’s CV, (iii) copies of diplomas and certificates, (iv) two recommendation letters, (where one should be from a supervisor of the Master thesis) and (v) thesis as well as other relevant documents that the applicant wish to refer to.

Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students.
