Uppsala University, Department of Pharmacy

Uppsala University hereby declares a position to pursue PhD studies in pharmaceutical sciences open for applications. The PhD project is to be conducted in the Pharmaceutics research group, localized at Uppsala Biomedical Center. The project is a part of the science program of SweDeliver. SweDeliver is a scientific network of Uppsala University and about 15 industrial partners in the form of a Vinnova competence center. Drug delivery is a research area focusing on the delivery of pharmacologically active substances to the body target with the right dose and duration. A central drug delivery question is how the drug should be formulated into a product and how this product should be manufactured. In the SweDeliver center, the research projects are organized under three drug delivery platforms, i.e. parenteral, oral and pulmonary drug delivery. The PhD project is run within the pulmonary drug delivery platform, i.e. drug delivery systems for administration to the lungs.

Duties/Project description:

Formulation of adhesive blends for inhalation powders. Pharmacological treatment of diseases of the airways is typically done by delivering drugs directly to the respiratory tract. A drug product for pulmonary drug delivery is often formulated as a special type of powder mixture referred to as an adhesive blend. Such blends have been subjected to considerable research but there is however no mechanistic foundation that explains how the blend performance depends on the particle properties of the blend components. Such an improved theoretical framework is necessary in order to formulate inhalation powders in a rational and optimal way. The research group pharmaceutics has proposed a qualitative model, referred to as a blend state map, which describes in a concentrated yet representative way the evolution of physical state of the adhesive blend with increased concentration of drug. Based on this model, we now intend to address the question of how the physical state of the blend affects the technological and inhalation performance of adhesive blends. To derive such knowledge, there is a need to develop refined laboratory methods used to study mixture properties, such as their mechanical stability and dispersibility in air. The expected outcome of this research is new and improved pharmacological treatment using inhalation powders.

The position is a 4-year full-time employment and the student. The position might also entail teaching and other assignments up to 20% of the full-time position (extending the position proportionally).

Requirements:

To be eligible for the position, the candidate must have at least 240 credits (hp), among which 60 credits (hp) should be on advanced level, university education in relevant subjects. Example of suitable educations are a M.Sc. degree or equivalent in pharmacy, drug development, chemical engineering and applied physics. Information about the PhD studies can be found at: http://www2.medfarm.uu.se/utbildning/forskarniva/.

We are looking for a candidate with an interest in and experience of laboratory work. The candidate is expected to collaborate with national and international colleagues both within and outside of the group. Good ability to master English in written and oral form is thus a requirement.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/?languageId=1.
