The Department of Information Technology holds a leading position in research as well as teaching at all levels. The department has 280 employees, including 120 faculty and 110 PhD students, and 30 research groups. More than 4000 students are enrolled annually. The department hosts many successful, externally supported, research efforts on different aspects of cybersecurity. The department is striving to establish cybersecurity as a strong and visible area in research and teaching, and is actively promoting internal and external collaboration. The holder is expected to develop a teaching and research profile in cybersecurity, as well as to take leadership responsibilities in coordinating cybersecurity activities within the department.

Description of Subject Area: Cybersecurity is a computing-based discipline dealing with the presence of adversaries. Within computer science, the area of cybersecurity spans many areas, including (but not limited to) data security, cryptography, software and hardware security, network and systems security, and privacy.

Duties: The position includes teaching, research and administration. Teaching duties include course responsibility, course administration, supervision of second- and third-cycle students, and development of courses in cybersecurity. The holder shall also keep abreast of developments within the subject area and the developments in wider community that are significant for the work at the university. Associate Professors are expected to maintain their own external research grants, collaborate with other researchers within the department, contribute in coordination of cybersecurity activities within the department, and participate in innovation and research collaborations with organizations outside the university.

Qualifications Required: According to the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance those qualified for appointment as Associate Professor are persons who have demonstrated teaching expertise and been awarded a PhD or have the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise. It is necessary that the pedagogical skills, the research expertise and the professional skills are relevant to the content of the employment and the tasks that will be included in the employment.

According to Uppsala University’s appointment regulations, teaching expertise is an eligibility requirement for appointment as an Associate Professor. To fulfil this requirement, the applicant should have participated in at least ten weeks of teacher training for University higher education, or be considered to have acquired the equivalent competence. If it has not been possible to acquire this qualification prior to employment, the training shall be completed during the first two years of employment. A general eligibility requirement is that the applicant must possess the personal capabilities necessary to carry out fully the duties of the appointment.

Documented ability to teach in Swedish and/or English is a requirement unless special reasons prevail. The holder is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years.

An applicant who is offered an employment as Associate Professor can be promoted to Professor if he/she has applied for this, is qualified for such a post, and moreover has been deemed suitable on the basis of the specific criteria established by the faculty board.

Assessment Criteria/Ranking

Research Expertise and Teaching Expertise: The ranking of eligible applicants will be based primarily on research and teaching expertise, which will be given equal weight. Research expertise comprises research merits as well as the applicant’s potential to contribute to the future development of both research and teaching. Expertise from industry, for example technical development and innovation, can be included as research merits. In assessing research expertise special weight will be attached to research merits related to computer science focusing on cybersecurity.

As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of research expertise. Teaching expertise comprises educational and teaching qualifications. This expertise can have been achieved outside the academy through supervision, internal training, mentoring programs, etc. In assessing teaching expertise special weight will be attached to merits in computer science focusing on cybersecurity.

Administrative Expertise and Management Expertise: Administrative expertise and management expertise is important for the employment and will be afforded consideration.

All merits must be documented in a manner that makes it possible to assess both quality and scope.

In filling this position the university aims to appoint the applicant who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of her/his competence and expertise, is judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations.

In an overall assessment of the applicant’s qualifications, parental leave, part-time work relating to care of children, union assignments, military service, or the like are to be regarded as work experience.
