Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application

Senior Lecturer in Eurasian Studies, with special focus on Political Science Uppsala University, Disciplinary Domain of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute for Russian and Eurasian studies (IRES).

IRES, the Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies (http://www.ires.uu.se/), provides an academic platform for integrated multi-disciplinary research on recent developments in Russia, and in the post-Soviet space.

Duties: The position includes teaching, examination, research and administration. Teaching duties include course coordination, course administration and supervision within the institute's master's program and commissioned education. The teaching involves politics and social processes in Russia and the post-Soviet area and is conducted within a framework of a multidisciplinary teaching program. The main focus of the teaching is on domestic politics, but Russian foreign and security policy may also be a part of the teaching duties. Teaching responsibilities involves course coordination and administration as well as supervision of students at the master's level, and, where applicable, supervision of doctoral students. Duties also include actively pursuing external research funding, following developments in the subject field as well as following relevant development in society that is of relevance for the research and education at the university. The research is primarily devoted to politics and social processes in Russia and, secondly, to the post-Soviet sphere. A comparative perspective is welcome (e.g. comparison within or between countries in the region, or over time) but is not necessary.

Eligibility: To be eligible for appointment as senior lecturer, the applicant must hold a Ph.D. or possess equivalent scholarly competence. Further on, the applicant must have demonstrated teaching expertise and have completed teacher training of relevance to operations at the University, or have acquired the equivalent knowledge. A general eligibility requirement is that the applicant must have the personal characteristics required to perform the duties of the post well.

The ability to teach both in Swedish and English is a requirement. An applicant who is proficient in only one of these languages at the time of appointment is expected to be able to teach in the other language within two years.

Documented scientific competence about Russia and the post-Soviet society as well as knowledge of the Russian language is a requirement.

Assessment: Equal importance will be given to teaching and research skills in the assessment of applicants.

In assessing research expertise research quality will be the prime consideration. The scope of research, primarily in regard to depth and breadth, will also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration will be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop research and education at the postgraduate level, the ability to acquire funding for research in competition, as well as the demonstrated capacity to interact with others both within academia and in the wider community.

Pedagogic proficiency will be assessed as carefully as scientific proficiency. Pedagogical skills should be well documented so that the quality can be assessed. Particular emphasis will be placed on the applicant's ability to work in a multidisciplinary teaching environment

In assessing teaching expertise teaching quality will be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, will also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration will be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching and instruction, as well as the ability to connect research to teaching in respect to research in the subject at hand, subject didactics, as well as teaching and learning in higher education. The ability to interact concerning issues of teaching and learning in higher education with actors inside and outside the University is also included in teaching expertise.

When the University appoints new teachers those applicants must be selected who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of their competence and expertise, are judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations.

The Recruitment Committee may in this recruitment come to use interviews, trial-lectures and referrals. The applicant should therefore submit a list of referees with insight into the applicant’s professional skill as well as personal qualities that may be of relevance for the position, e.g. ability to cooperate, ability to lead and working methods.

Previous experience of working in multidisciplinary research environments is a merit.

Assessment, other skills: Administrative and management skills are important for this position and will be afforded great weight.

Administrative expertise is demonstrated, for example, through the capacity to plan, organize, and prioritize work in an efficient and task-related manner as well as through the ability to assign and observe time frames. Expertise includes overall operational planning and the capacity to manage resources in a way that reflects operational priorities as well as the ability to work in a structured manner based on an awareness of goals and quality.

Management expertise is demonstrated through the capacity to lead operations and personnel, make decisions, take responsibility, and motivate others, providing them with what is needed for the efficient achievement of common goals. The abilities to coordinate the group and help create a sense of involvement, participation, and enjoyment in work and to deal with conflicts constitute further examples of demonstrated expertise.

Personal circumstances that may be of relevance in merit evaluation, for example parental leave, should be mentioned in the list of qualifications (CV).
