Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities.

The Division of Materials Theory is known to have a world-class research environment in solid state theory, including both numerical and analytical models. The research is focused on electronic structures, magnetism, spin-tronics, topological phases of matter, correlated phenomena and green energy solutions.

The PhD student will work in a theoretical project to develop methods for magnetisation dynamics. The methods to be used are based on quantum mechanics, and involve density functional theory, dynamic mean-field theory and atomistic spin-dynamics simuations. Interaction with experimental partners is an important part of the work, and in the education there is planned collaboration with scientists at the HELIOS experiment (https://www.physics.uu.se/research/molcond/ongoingresearch/x-ray-based-methodology/helios/) at Ångström laboratory, Uppsala University.

The applicant is expected to have a Master's degree (or similar) in Physics, Chemistry or Applied Mathematics. The application should include a statement of research interest, CV, certificates of exams, degrees and grades, a copy of the Master thesis, or equivalent, published articles and other relevant materials, if available. Also, letter(s) of recommendation can be included.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/?languageId=1.

Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students.
