The Department of Archeology and Ancient History is a multi-disciplinary institution that has a fruitful cooperation between the disciplines involved. At the department there is teaching and research in the subjects of Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, Archeology, Osteology, Egyptology and Global Environmental History. Uppsala University is establishing a new graduate school in sustainable development. The main mission of the graduate school is to conduct research based on key social challenges, where local relevance meets international excellence. The research will include changed energy systems, sustainable consumption and destinations development, and will address significant issues such as conservation and change, as well as the definition and management of resources. The graduate school is rooted in ongoing interdisciplinary collaborations in research and education, conducted in an international environment. Uppsala University Campus Gotland, where the graduate school is located, is a hub for the University's research and education in sustainability. We work with international partners, visiting researchers and local players with a special focus on knowledge development to cope with the changes needed to live well during climate change. As a PhD student, you will be part of this interdisciplinary research environment. You will also benefit from the courses, seminars and first-class doctoral supervision offered at the graduate school.

Description of position and project: A PhD position in Archaeology is hereby announced. This postgraduate position covers four years and is financed with employment as a doctoral student. The PhD candidate in archaeology will work jointly with a PhD candidate from the research program for Natural Resources and Sustainable Development at the Department of Earth Sciences within the frames of the interdisciplinary project Fisheries and coastal development in small island context - the past, present and future. This project investigates marine resources and coastal zones in a long-term perspective with the focus on the use of marine assets, loss of biodiversity and climate change. A common research question is how the coastal zone and the marine resources, especially fisheries, have developed and changed over time and what their current status is. The results will form a base to develop strategies for a future sustainable management of the costal zones and fisheries. The special assignment for the PhD candidate of Archaeology is to analyse archaeological assemblages of fish bones from various time frames, and to connect the results to an analysis of global and local climate change data and various forms of managements of these resources. The project focuses on Gotland Island in the Baltic Sea but with comparative case studies from small island contexts in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. In this interdisciplinary project, the successful applicant will interact closely with the PhD student from the Department of Earth Sciences as well as with other PhD students in the research school. 

Entry requirements: Basic qualifications are seen as a) having passed a degree at advanced level; b) completed course requirements of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 at an advanced level; c) have approved results at first-level courses of at least 90 higher education credits in archaeology. Competent is also the person who, in another way within or outside the country, has acquired essentially equivalent knowledge. Regarding special qualifications, the applicant is required to meet the requirements for the advanced level of the relevant postgraduate education subject.

Position: The successful candidate will pursue their doctoral studies full-time at Campus Gotland, Uppsala University and is expected to participate actively in weekly seminars and workshops, etc. at the department and within the research programme.

The position is a 4-year full-time employment, which qualifies for all Swedish social benefits, such as paid parental leave. The position might also entail teaching and other assignments up to 20 % of the full-time position (extending the position proportionally).

Additional desirable qualifications: A specialisation in Sustainable Development or Education for Sustainable Development, GIS and handling of digital data, zoo-osteology, marine biology and fluency in the English language (written and spoken) are considered as additional criteria that are considered when evaluating the applications.
