Interdisciplinary graduate school in sustainable development: Uppsala University is establishing a new graduate school in sustainable development. The main mission of the graduate school is to conduct research based on key social challenges, where local relevance meets international excellence. The research will include changed energy systems, sustainable consumption and destinations development, and will address significant issues such as conservation and change, as well as the definition and management of resources. The graduate school is rooted in ongoing interdisciplinary collaborations in research and education, conducted in an international environment. Uppsala University Campus Gotland, where the graduate school is located, is a hub for the University's research and education in sustainability. We work with international partners, visiting researchers and local players with a special focus on knowledge development to cope with the changes needed to live well during climate change. As a PhD student, you will be part of this interdisciplinary research environment. You will also benefit from the courses, seminars and first-class doctoral supervision offered at the graduate school.

Department of Art History: Within the interdisciplinary graduate school 12 PhD students will work and one of these will be placed at the department of Art History. The department of Art History offers education on the basic level, advanced level and PhD level as well as conducts research within the three disciplines of art history, textile studies and conservation of cultural heritage at two locations, Campus English Park in Uppsala and Campus Gotland in Visby. Duties/Project description: The Department of Law and the Department of Art History will jointly run two doctoral projects within the framework of the new graduate school at Uppsala University - Campus Gotland. The PhD student at the Department of History of Arts will focus on conservation of cultural heritage. The common question for the two proposed doctoral projects is how existing legislation handles the balance between, on the one hand, the goal of sustainable energy use and, on the other hand, the goals of preserving heritage values. For example, how additional insulation, window replacement or installation of solar panels in historic buildings are dealt with in relation to legislation and sustainability. The PhD project focuses on how the laws are perceived by different actors and how they affect transformation processes in the built environment (outside the judiciary). The objective is to study how of societal goals of energy policy in practice relate to the goals of conservation of the built heritage in order to contribute to the development of legal instruments that will promote a balance between energy efficiency and the preservation of historical, architectural and social values. The laws are applied and interpreted at three different levels: in the judicial system, by municipalities and county boards) and in decisions for planning and implementation of renovation processes. The two doctoral students will work together on all three levels. The project aims to generate new theoretical and practical knowledge to the benefit of decision-makers and administration at both state and municipal level. The research questions are answered using both qualitative and quantitative comparative methods. Questions and methods can to a certain extent be adapted to the competencies of the doctoral student being recruited.

The doctoral student's job is to conduct his / her education at doctoral level and to actively participate in the activities of the department and the research program. Attendance at higher seminars and participation in the general duties of the department is expected. Employment within administration and / or teaching may be considered (up to 20%) and in such cases provide a basis for extending the employment period to a corresponding degree.

Requirements: To qualify for a doctoral position a candidate should have a Master's degree or equivalent. Applicants must also have special qualifications in Art History or equivalent. The applicant should have good knowledge of Swedish and English.

Additional qualifications: Knowledge and experience in the field of conservation of cultural heritage are particularly meritorious.
