Uppsala University, Department of Surgical Sciences

The Department of Surgical Sciences (IKV) is part of the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy. IKV has about 120 employees and 200 registered doctoral (third cycle) students, the majority of which are clinically active doctors and nurses. The yearly turnover is SEK 152 million. Research is conducted at the department, as well as teaching in the first, second and third cycles. Teaching is, among other areas, conducted within the education programmes for doctors, nurses and specialty nurses. Research is conducted in research groups organised according to surgical specialties and closely aligned subject areas, such as anaesthesia and intensive care and radiology. A great deal of research is conducted in cooperation between separate research groups within IKV and other departments at Uppsala University, as well as other universities in Sweden and the rest of the world. Many of the department's employees have combined positions at the University Hospital.

Duties: The position entails overall responsibility for research and third-cycle education in radiology, as well as teaching at the first, second and third-cycle levels. The position includes supervision of doctoral students and students. Duties include leading an active research group in the subject and contributing to positive development of research and education in the subject in collaboration with other researchers and teachers within the Faculty. Duties include monitoring developments in your subject area and social developments otherwise that are material to the work of the University. Administrative duties and internal and external representative assignments may be required. Clinical practice in radiology is included and the position may be combined with employment as a specialist physician at Uppsala University Hospital.

Eligibility: To be eligible for employment as a professor, the applicant must have shown both research and teaching expertise (Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4, Section 3). Under the Appointment Regulations for Uppsala University (AR), having the personal characteristics required to perform the duties of the post well is a general eligibility requirement for teachers.

Research expertise must have been demonstrated by means of independent research contributions and by the candidate’s work being of consistently high quality by international and national standards. The applicant must have demonstrated proficiency in planning, initiating, leading and developing research; have shown a capacity to obtain research grants on a competitive basis; and exhibit well-documented expertise in supervising students at postgraduate level. The candidate’s contributions to the international and national academic community will be assessed on such criteria as quality and scale of publication in the most relevant publication channels in the subject. Requirements for international merits must be assessed on the basis of the character and specific circumstances of the subject. (AR Section 32)

Teaching expertise must have been demonstrated by educational and teaching qualifications (see Section 23 AR). Furthermore, the applicant must demonstrate well-documented expertise in supervision at the first- and second-cycle levels. A prerequisite for having demonstrated teaching expertise is that applicants have completed teacher training for higher education of relevance to operations at the University, comprising at least ten weeks, or have acquired the equivalent knowledge. If special circumstances apply, this training for teachers in higher education may be completed during the first two years of employment. The teacher training must also include third cycle supervision. (AR Sections 23, 33)

The applicant must have a documented ability to teach in Swedish.

To be eligible for this position, the applicant must hold a degree of Master of Science in Medicine and specialist expertise in radiology. The applicant must, if they do not have a Swedish specialist qualification in radiology, have submitted an application for a Swedish specialist qualification in radiology to the National Board of Health and Welfare no later than the deadline for application to this position. The applicant must, however, have obtained their specialist qualification before the decision is made to employ them. For information on obtaining a specialist qualification, see The National Board of Health and Welfare (http://www.socialstyrelsen.se/english).

If the person offered the appointment also meets Uppsala University Hospital’s requirements for appointment as a consultant physician, the appointee will be offered a position combined with a position as a consultant physician.

Assessment criteria: In the selection among eligible applicants, research expertise will be assigned greater weight than teaching expertise. The assessment criteria will however be co-weighted such that an applicant assessed as having much greater teaching expertise than an applicant who has slightly greater research expertise may be ranked ahead of the latter. Clinical expertise is also significant to the position and will be assigned weight.

Research expertise comprises research merits. In assessing research expertise research quality must be the primary consideration. The scope of research, primarily in regard to depth and breadth, must also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education in the third cycle, the ability to acquire funding for research in competition, as well as the demonstrated capacity to interact with others both within academia and in the wider community. (AR Section 21) See also Guidelines and assessment criteria for recruiting and promoting teachers at the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy (GA) Section 3.

Teaching expertise comprises educational and teaching qualifications. In assessing teaching expertise teaching quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, must also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching and instruction, as well as the ability to connect research to teaching in respect to research in the subject at hand, subject didactics, as well as teaching and learning in higher education. The ability to interact concerning issues of teaching and learning in higher education with actors inside and outside the University is also included in teaching expertise. (AR Section 23) See also GA Section 4.

Clinical expertise is demonstrated through clinical work and clinical training as well as participation in clinical developmental work. Among other things, clinical developmental work involves efforts to improve or rationalise health care and medical care. (AR Section 25)

Assessment criteria for other expertise: Management expertise and administrative expertise are important for the appointment and will both be assigned weight. The ability to collaborate with the surrounding community and to communicate information about research and development work will be taken into consideration.

Management expertise is demonstrated through ability to lead activities and staff, make decisions, assume responsibility, motivate others and provide them with what they require for the effective achievement of common objectives. Ability to coordinate a group and to help generate a sense of commitment, enhance participation and enjoyment of work, and ability to deal with conflicts, are further examples of how expertise is demonstrated. (AR Section 31) See also GA Section 5.

Administrative expertise is demonstrated, for example, through the capacity to plan, organise, and prioritise work in an efficient and task-related manner as well as through the ability to assign and observe time frames. Expertise includes overall operational planning and the capacity to manage resources in a way that reflects operational priorities as well as the ability to work in a structured manner based on an awareness of goals and quality. (AR Section 29) See also GA Section 5.

When assessing collaborative expertise, experience with and expertise in education and outreach, editorships and other activities related to knowledge exchange between the university and the surrounding community, as well as experience with innovation and entrepreneurship, shall be of significance. See GA Section 6.

All qualifications must be documented to enable both quality and scope to be assessed.

When the University appoints new teachers, the candidate chosen will be the person who, following an overall qualitative assessment of skills and proficiency, is judged to have the best prospects of implementing and developing the duties concerned and also of helping to bring about favourable development of the work. (AR Section 4)

The gender-equality aspect will be applied if it is determined following a qualitative assessment that two applicants of different genders have equal or approximately equal qualifications.

Applicants’ parental leave, part-time work due to child care, trade union positions, military service and similar commitments are considered as qualifying employment experience.
