The department of Cell and Molecular Biology (ICM) is one of the most internationally diverse, scientifically broad, and eminent departments of biomolecular sciences in Europe. The research at ICM is divided into six main areas, covering everything from cell biology to molecular biophysics. You will be employed by ICM and you will at the same time be tied to the National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden (NBIS) and Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab).

We are now looking to grow our team to help us in developing the bioinformatics systems of the future within the framework of one of the world's most eminent universities.

Work duties: You will be working with agile development of software solutions and user interfaces, unique to the area of bioinformatics. The position involves taking responsibility for the whole lifecycle of applications, from initial planning and development to deployment using automated deployment tools, to the eventual decommissioning or migration at the end. You will also work in administering our existing systems. There are usually several ongoing projects, meaning that you will have the possibility to develop in a number of programming languages, such as Python, Java and Go. Many of the projects we are involved in are linked to "data sciences", and there will be opportunities to acquire skills in using related tools and languages (for example R).

You will work in a team of developers, who are located both at NBIS and internationally. The job also includes contact with experts and researchers within the field of bioinformatics. Qualifications required: The applicant shall have at least a Bachelor's degree within the areas of Information Technology, Computer Science, Scientific Computing, or Bioinformatics, or shall possess a documented equivalent or higher level of understanding within one or several of these areas.

The applicant shall furthermore have:

• Good knowledge and documented experience in one or several current programming languages (Python, C or Java, Go, etc.) and Bash (or equivalent Unix shell).
• A high level of familiarity with Linux systems and their administration.
• Several years of documented system development or system administration experience
• Being able to express yourself fluently in English both in writing and in speech.

And at least one of the following:

• Knowledge of databases and SQL.
• Knowledge of web programming, Javascript, CSS, and REST.
• Knowledge of virtual machines and application containers.
• Experience of version management system such as Git, Subversion, Mercurial

The applicant shall have good interpersonal and communication skills, and be self-motivated. You should be service-minded and able to adapt. You should also be quality conscious as well as result-oriented. Emphasis will be put on personal suitability.

Merits: Since we are a facility integrated within SciLifeLab, we value pre-existing experience from the field of bioinformatics. Previous work experience from system development within academia, with configuration management, deployment tools, and programming for the web, is extra meriting.

In addition, the following are counted as meritorious:

• Knowledge and experience of using systems for continuous integration (e.g. Jenkins, Travis CI).
• Experience of working in a physical distributed team with communication/coordination via digital tools, video meetings and so on.
• Knowledge and experience of networking and IT-Security.
• Knowledge and experience of infrastructure as code, such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef, Terraform.
• Knowledge and experience of cloud technologies and “cloud-native” such as Kubernetes.
• Knowledge and experience working as a UI/UX Designer or similar role.
• Accustomed to development according to, for example, Github flow.
• Previous work in an open-source project.
• Accustomed to working in any system management model or other IT support model such as ITIL.

NBIS is a distributed national research infrastructure with funding from Vetenskapsrådet (the Swedish Research Council), Knut & Alice Wallenberg Foundation, SciLifeLab and Swedish universities. The purpose of NBIS is to provide bioinformatics support and infrastructure to Life Science researchers. There are around 90 NBIS experts distributed around the country with expertise in DNA, RNA and protein analysis, systems biology, genome analysis, mass spectroscopy proteomics, metabolomics, data management, large-scale computing, and systems development. The NBIS systems developers team consists of 10+ experts, working on implementing tools for large scale analysis and data management. It is this group of developers that we now are looking to extend. SciLifeLab is a national centre for molecular biosciences focusing on health and environmental research. The centre combines leading expertise with advanced knowledge in translational medicine and molecular biosciences. The goal of SciLifeLab also includes building a strong research community around itself through education and collaboration. SciLifeLab is a national resource run by Karolinska Institutet (KI), Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan (KTH), Stockholm University and Uppsala University.
