Uppsala University, Department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology

IRES, the Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies (http://www.ires.uu.se/), provides an academic platform for integrated multi-disciplinary research on recent developments in Russia, and in the post-Soviet space.

The Dept. Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology (http://antro.uu.se/) provides research and education about some of the complex issues that society and humanity world-wide face in the contemporary age of globalization and rapid climate change.

The PhD education takes place at the Department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology, but the position will be located at IRES. Supervisors will be appointed from both the Department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology and IRES.

Duties: Education at the research level has a duration of four years, financed with employment as PhD candidate. PhD candidates are expected to conduct their education by working full time and by participating actively in the activities of the departments. Obligatory administrative and teaching duties at the departments may not exceed 20% of full-time.

The suggested PhD project should relate to one of the broader areas of Environmental Anthropology, Economic Anthropology or Political Ecology. The main geographical area of the project or at least one of the field sites should be within Russia or post-Soviet Eurasia.

Requirements: The successful applicant is expected to suggest a PhD research project within the discipline of Anthropology (with relevance to the broader fields of Environmental Anthropology, Economic Anthropology or Political Ecology). The study should have Russia and/or post-Soviet Eurasia as a geographical focus. To be accepted into the postgraduate research program at the Dept. Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology, the applicant must have a documented undergraduate education in the subject of Anthropology. Documented knowledge about Russia and/or post-Soviet Eurasia and of any of the languages spoken within these areas will be considered as a strong merit in the selection process.

Education at the research level in Cultural Anthropology (https://antro.uu.se/admissions/phd-studies/) is regulated by the general study plan. For official policies (in Swedish) governing education at the research level, see Högskoleförordningen chapters 5, 8 and 9. University and the Faculty of Arts guidelines for education at the research level are available at: https://regler.uu.se/

The selection process will consider the applicant’s capacity to complete the education at the research level. This capacity is judged based upon the applicant’s research plan. That is why it is of highest importance that it explains in a clear language the problems of the suggested study, its significance to the field, the methods of research and the time plan, as well as how the project relates to the regional and thematic focus of the call. In addition, publications and university essays are important when judging an applicant’s ability to follow and benefit from the doctoral program. The ability to express oneself effectively in both written and spoken English is important.

Application procedure: A complete application must include:

a) a verified copy of a degree certificate that proves the applicant’s eligibility for PhD graduate studies (postgraduate in UK) at the research level in Cultural Anthropology;

b) a brief CV;

c) a copy of the MA thesis within the discipline of Anthropology or an equivalent degree;

d) an outline of the proposed research plan/project in English (max. 5 pages). The outline must explain clearly the main questions of the suggested study, its significance to the field, the methods of research and how fieldwork is to be carried out, and time plan. It should be clear how the project relates to the regional and thematic focus of the call;

e) other publications or relevant documents, if any, that support the application;
