Uppsala University, Department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology

Duties:

Education at the research level has a duration of four years, financed with employment as PhD candidate. PhD candidates are expected to conduct their education at the research level by working full time and by participating actively in the activities of the department. Obligatory administrative and teaching duties at the department may not exceed 20% of full-time.

Education at the research level in Cultural Anthropology is regulated by the general study plan. For information about eligibility and the requirements for admission: https://www.antro.uu.se/admissions/phd-studies/

The position is administered by the Department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology, but the holder of the position will be an active member of the Engaging Vulnerability (EV) research program at Uppsala University.

EV is a multidisciplinary research program funded for ten years (2015–2025) by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) with support from the Vice-Chancellor’s strategic funds, and the Faculty of Arts. The goal of the project is to conduct empirical research and develop perspectives that engage vulnerability as a productive resource rather than a lack or privation. Currently, research within the program is being carried out in the disciplines of anthropology, ethnology, philosophy, rhetoric, media and communication, comparative literature, design studies, musicology, and history of ideas. Information about the program and its activities can be found at http://www.engagingvulnerability.se

Requirements:

The selection process will consider the applicant’s capacity to complete the education at the research level. In order to be considered, the application must explain clearly how the project constitutes a contribution to the overall aims of the EV research program. These aspects are judged based upon the applicant’s research plan and how this plan relates to existing research at the department and the EV program. The research plan must describe how fieldwork for the proposed project is to be carried out. In addition, publications and university essays are important when judging an applicant’s ability to follow and benefit from the doctoral program. The ability to express oneself in both written and spoken English is considered important.

For official policies (in Swedish) governing education at the research level, see Högskoleförordningen chapters 5, 8 and 9. University and the Faculty of Arts guidelines for education at the research level are available at: http://regler.uu.se
