Uppsala universitet, Teknisk-naturvetenskapliga vetenskapsområdet

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities.

The department is hosting the FREIA Laboratory that performs research towards future particle accelerators, with special focus on the European Spallation Source (ESS), the High Luminosity upgrade of the LHC at CERN, the development of free-electron lasers, and the development of ultra-fast electron diffraction (UED) instrument in Uppsala.

Now we invite applications for a research engineer position to work with mechatronics design for research instrumentation and particle accelerators.

The candidate is offered the possibility to work in an exciting modern research area in physics and will have opportunities to interact and collaborate with leading groups in experimental physics and engineering. You will be posted at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), Oxfordshire, UK, to work at the laboratory’s spallation neutron source ISIS, for up to two years.

Subject Description: The candidate will, in collaboration with other members of the FREIA Laboratory, work on the design and development of advanced instrumentation and accelerators in general, and specifically on mechatronics design for the critical components of two spallation-neutron instruments, the FREIA Instrument at ESS and the ZOOM Instrument at ISIS. New methods and new technologies need to be developed and followed-up during their implementation.

Work Description: Deliver engineering solutions satisfying the scientific requirements of the spallation-neutron instruments: engineering conceptual design, detailed mechanical design, procurement, testing, installation, commissioning. Regular reporting of the different development steps, regular communication with specialists on the different topics, at ISIS, ESS, FREIA and at other laboratories. Final reporting of the project. Projects are organized on national and international level and require travel.

Responsibilities:

  • Produce concepts, designs and engineering drawings through the use of 2D & 3D CAD systems.
  • Create and manage specifications based on customer requirements.
  • Produce calculations to validate designs.
  • Present designs for peer and stakeholder review.
  • Present work both in writing and verbally to a wide range of audiences.
  • Procure on-demand manufactured items and in-stock components.

Requirements: The applicant must have either a MEng or MSc degree in engineering or related area. You shall demonstrate a drive and determination to achieve results, be open minded and flexible in relation to the type of work assigned. You shall take responsibility, shall organize multiple tasks simultaneously, and have a genuine interest in research and technology.

The following experience and competency is required:

  • Experience and knowledge in mechatronics design.
  • Highly motivated, innovative and inquisitive.
  • Strong ability to think creatively.
  • Willing to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to read and understand technical information.
  • Ability to communicate well both technically and non-technically.
  • Ability to produce good written work and reports.
  • Suitable for employment to work with ionizing radiation.
  • Available for short travels and occasional stays elsewhere (courses, seminars etc.).
  • Good oral and written proficiency in English.

Additional experience and competency that is of advantage:

  • Controlled motion of objects.
  • Programming of motion control units using TwinCAT/IEC 61131 and specific controller languages.
  • Industrial experience.
  • Oral and written proficiency in Swedish.

Application Procedure: The application shall be submitted in Swedish or English and must include a brief description of your interests in technology and relevant experience, CV, copies of certificates, diplomas and other documents which the applicant wishes to claim.
