PhD posistion are in the subject Electronics with specialization in biological and medical sensor technology, at the Angstrom Laboratory, Department of Electrical Engineering, Division of Solid State Electronics.
Project description: Exosomes and other types of nano-scale extracellular vesicles (EVs), secreted by all cell types, have been found to take part in a highly sophisticated intercellular communication, thereby offering a unique opportunity for diagnostic and therapeutic intervention in various pathological conditions including cancer. Released in various body fluids, these vesicles constitute an important form of biomarkers for “liquid biopsy concept” allowing for non-invasive diagnostics and treatment monitoring.
In this project, the aim is to develop a silicon nanochip-based method to isolate exosomes and determine their parent cell of origin by multiple analyses of protein expression and RNA/micro-RNA content. This will allow a quantitative detection and monitoring of tumors at a high sensitivity, resulting in a method for early detection of cancer and also enabling therapy monitoring with biomarkers of relevance for therapy decision. This multidisciplinary project involves strong collaboration among the partners from KTH, Scilifelaboratory, Karolinska Institute and RISE Acreo and combines expertise and state-of-the-art methodologies from genomics, proteomics, nanotechnology and clinical oncology.
