The Department of Mathematics conducts research and provides education at undergraduate and graduate levels in mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. The number of employees is 120, including 30 PhD students. The Department has three research programs: analysis and probability, algebra and geometry, applied mathematics and statistics. Duties/Project description: The duties of a PhD student are primarily directed at his/her own research education, which lasts for four years. The work may also involve, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), other departmental duties, mainly related to teaching undergraduate courses – in which case the position may be extended to maximum five years. The PhD student will work under the supervision of  Michele Del Zotto about topics at the interface of mathematics and physics in the context of the ERC project MEMO (StG 851931) about the memory of solitons.

Requirements: In order to be employed as doctoral student, the candidate has to be  admitted to the research education program, and for this, his/her potential ability to  pursue the program is decisive. The applicant should have a master degree or equivalent which includes a bachelor degree or equivalent in mathematics, applied  mathematics or theoretical physics or at least in all likelihood obtain such a degree no later than 1 September, 2020. The candidate should have a good command of spoken and written English.

Additional qualifications: Applications from candidates with prior knowledge of  quantum field theory, or aspects of string theory, or aspects of the associated geometrical structures will be given priority.

We do not want any letters of recommendation.
