The PhD student position is at Electricity Division, the Ångström Laboratory.

Project description: The doctoral student will work with vulnerability and risk reduction in electricity networks. The project is part of the Center for Natural Disaster Studies (CNDS), a national research center aimed at preventing and improving society's preparedness for risks by increasing knowledge of the dynamics and consequences of natural disasters. Collaboration and communication within the CNDS network provides an interdisciplinary platform for exchanging expertise in natural disasters and risk reduction.

The project aims to study the vulnerability of the electricity grid and the results will be used to provide risk reduction guidelines for both controllable and renewable energy installations.

Duties: The PhD project will focus on two areas:

  • Analyse the ability of the electricity grid to handle a high proportion of electricity produced from intermittent renewable energy sources, such as wind power,
  • Study the readiness of the electricity grid to deal with rare conditions with high impact, such as hurricanes and earthquakes.

The main duties are to devote the research studies, which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).

Additional qualifications: A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programs if he or she:

  • has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
  • has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or
  • has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.  

Requirements:

  • Degree or equivalent as above in electrical engineering, engineering physics or energy systems engineering.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English and Swedish.
  • Experience and interest in both numerical modeling and programming as well as experimental work are merit.
  • A strong motivation and ability to work individually is a merit.
  • Industrial experience is a merit.
