Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities.

We invite applications for a four-year position as a PhD student in Theoretical Hadron Physics, starting 1st of June 2020 or as agreed upon.

Project description: One of the unsolved problems within the Standard Model of Particle Physics is the lack of quantitative understanding of the structure of matter at the femtometer scale. This scale is characterized by non-perturbative relativistic many-body dynamics, confinement and chiral symmetry breaking. The PhD position is part of the project “Femto-science: Electromagnetic transition form factors of the nucleon” that is funded by vetenskapsrådet (the Swedish Research Council) with Stefan Leupold as P.I. Besides financing the PhD position, funds are allocated for attending international PhD schools and conferences. The Nuclear Physics Division at Uppsala University comprises experimentalists and theoreticians who collaborate on a daily level. The successful candidate will work on the physics of nucleon transition form factors with the aim to obtain a better understanding of the structure of baryons. On the technical side, important tools to deal with the long-range many-body aspects are dispersion theory and chiral perturbation theory.

Requirements: The candidate must have a masters degree in physics or equivalent. Proficiency in written and spoken English is necessary.

Additional qualifications: Experience with quantum field theory, in particular dispersion theory and chiral perturbation theory, is a clear merit.

Application: Must be submitted at the link below in order to be considered.

The complete application should contain
- CV (max 2 pages) - Personal letter stating research interests and motivation for applying for this particular position (max 2 pages)
- Certificates for obtained academic degrees
- Master thesis of the applicant, or if it is not yet complete, a summary and a statement from the  supervisor of the expected completion date
- A list of publications
- Names and email addresses of 2 reference persons who can provide recommendation letters, preferably scientists who collaborated with the applicant.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
