The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer Courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 80 persons are employed at the Department and at present some 300-400 students are enrolled every academic year. Courses offered include undergraduate and post-graduate courses, as well as a Ph. D. programme. For more information, visit http://www.pcr.uu.se.

The Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) has recorded ongoing violent conflicts since the 1970s. The data provided is one of the most accurate and well-used data-sources on global armed conflicts and its definition of armed conflict is becoming a standard in how conflicts are systematically defined and studied.

The Department and UCDP are now looking for a research assistant for a 12 months full-time employment, starting in April 2020.

Work assignments:
The tasks consist of assisting the project management mainly by coding violent events from news articles and other sources into the UCDP database, with a special focus on Syria. Text writing to varying degrees will also be included in the tasks.

Qualification requirements:
The applicant must have the following:

  • The role requires an advanced understanding of theories and concepts of war and peace, a deeper understanding of the research process, and experience of independent work, the requirement is that the applicant has a master's degree in peace and conflict studies.
  • Good knowledge of political violence and theories of peace and conflict
  • Independent analytical ability
  • Very good English in speech and writing
  • Very good knowledge of UCDP and its definitions
  • Very good knowledge of the conflict/s/ in Syria, specifically in regard to conflict actors and conflict dynamics.
  • Previous experience of similar data collection work in the field of conflict studies.

Desirable / meritorious in general: Experience of data collection on Syria and the rest of the Middle East.

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: 1 April 2020, or as otherwise agreed.
