Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för moderna språk

The Department of Modern Languages has some 60 employees. They are engaged mainly in research and teaching in numerous languages, in both language studies and literary studies.

The Department now announces three vacant doctoral studentships with specialisation in language or literary studies, in one of the subject areas within the Department’s PhD programmes: Finno-Ugric Languages, Romance Languages, Slavic Languages or German. In all these areas, the specialisations of language studies and literary studies are available. Click on the subject areas here to read about the researchers’ profiles, and note that while these researchers specialise in certain subject areas, they are qualified to supervise doctoral students in closely related areas as well.

Duties/Project description: PhD studies last four years and are funded by means of employment as a doctoral student. Doctoral students are required to devote their working time largely to education at PhD level, and to play an active part in the Department’s seminar work. In addition, some service (such as teaching) at the Department may be involved. The final form of the student’s project will be defined in consultation with the supervisor.

Qualification requirements and eligibility To be eligible for admission to PhD studies and thus for employment as a doctoral student, the applicant must have both basic and specific eligibility.

Basic eligibility means having obtained a degree at advanced (Master’s or second-cycle) level; completed courses conferring at least 240 higher education (HE) or European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits, of which at least 60 must be at advanced level; or acquired broadly corresponding knowledge, in or outside Sweden, in some other way.

Specific eligibility means meeting the requirements for the one-year Master’s degree in one of the following subjects: Finno-Ugric, Romance or Slavic languages or German, or in some other way having obtained corresponding, documented qualifications in these subjects and the specialisations (literary or language studies) in which the Department’s research is conducted.

An exemption from the requirement of Swedish language skills may, if necessary, be applied for from the Faculty by an applicant who is otherwise judged to have the best qualifications. Knowledge of Swedish does, however, count as a qualification.

For further information concerning the Department’s PhD programmes, see the General Syllabus for PhD Studies in the respective language area:

Selection: Selection is based on the applicants’ assessed ability to benefit from the education. The criteria for this assessment are the applicants’ grades, degree of maturity and capacity for independent judgement and critical analysis, demonstrated partly through degree projects at Bachelor’s (first-cycle) and Master’s (second-cycle) level. The assessment will also include the quality of the applicant’s research plan(s), references, relevant experience and written account of reasons for applying for the position, and also interviews.

The application must be written in English or Swedish and include the following:

  • A completed application form. Download the form here.
  • A CV and transcripts of academic results confirming general and specific eligibility for PhD studies.
  • Certified copies of degree certificate(s) and/or diploma(s).
