Uppsala University, Disciplinary Domain of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Psychology

Project description: Doctoral student in psychology, Uppsala University, Department of Psychology, The Division of Emotion Psychology. The advertised doctoral position is linked to Karin Brocki's research group, which mainly focuses on understanding the developmental mechanisms that contribute to individual differences in emotional and cognitive self-regulation. We investigate this mainly through longitudinal studies in which we follow children in systematic studies from infancy to middle childhood. We also investigate the link between self-regulation ability and subsequent behavioral problems, especially in relation to ADHD and its comorbid conditions. The doctoral student will primarily work within the EFFECT project, which aims to map the developmental mechanisms behind typical and atypical self-regulation ability and the importance of environmental and genetic factors in an innovative multidisciplinary approach. The project is based on three sub-studies that incorporate methods from classical developmental psychology, neuropsychology (fMRI) and genetics in a longitudinal design where cohorts with high and low risk of ADHD are followed over important development periods. The project will generate new knowledge of theoretical and clinical relevance on risk and protective factors for atypical / typical development of self-regulation ability.

The project is led by prof. Karin Brocki, who will also be the main supervisor for the doctoral project. It is expected of the doctoral student to formulate their own research questions within the EFFECT project. Particular merit is previous experience of working with children and their parents in research projects in psychology or in clinical activities. It is of the utmost importance that the applicant is used to independent work, has good organizational ability and is goal oriented.

The doctoral student will primarily engage in research. Other work at the Department such as teaching and administration can optionally be included (max 20%). The successful applicant will be supported by an employment as a PhD for 4 full years.
